True enough.

We talk about Bush Derangement Syndrome or Palin Derangement Syndrome, where hatred of a political figure causes liberals to lose all tenuous grip on sanity, but we’re also saddled with ODS, where people here are so desperate get anything on Obama that they’ll believe the craziest nonsense.

It’s sad, really, largely because it’s what he wants. We rant and rave about Photoshop traces on a photo of his grandparents and the right slowly loses credibility among the mushy moderates of the country, the ones we need to win a national election. For every nut job conspiracy theory, we find it just a little harder to effectively criticize Obamacare.

Cynical hustlers like Farrah don’t care about that. They don’t need our agenda to succeed, they don’t care about the well-being of our country. They only care about making money, and they can make money pandering to our worst instincts. No matter what the greater damage.

That’s why these lies need to be stopped here, before they get out into the larger political theater and mark all conservatives as unhinged. We must police our own.

ODS, yeah that is a pretty good description. People want to find that smoking gun so badly that they just aren’t as skeptical as they would be if the story wasn’t about Obama. Then, the media can point out how silly we look and imply that it is really because we’re all racists. So, it’s a double win for Obama when we indulge ourselves and jump the gun without really being critical.

Also, there’s a smokescreen created by this false stuff. When Obama really does something nefarious, and we point it out, people will always be skeptical of it because they see that some conservatives are spouting nonsense as well.

That’s why we can’t countenance this nonsense, or the stupid birther garbage, or the (fortunately rare) racial remarks. Whenever anyone on our side falls into that easy trap, it tarnishes the ability of the rest of us to reach the people we need.
