A++
Maybe the weight of Obamacare will finally circumscribe the interloper. When policy hits people squarely in their pocketbook, they tend to sit up and take notice.

Thanks ... I did note that I somewhat “stepped on” a previous post in the same vein — for some reason today, I didn’t do a preview of the full thread before posting which usually circumvents this.

OK, probably too late for this conversation. But it is a weird situation.

My hometown Jayhawks have lost 4 straight and find themselves 4-4 with the final game coming up. That’s 4-3 in games that count in the conference.

Now they play their arch-rival Friday for a chance at a playoff game.

Here’s where it gets weird.

The 2nd place team in our conference has had a player declared ineligible because he had a 9th grade year once in Michigan and again in PA. So they have been ruled to forfeit all games this year. They are appealing to the state association.

Playoff pairings are next Monday, so the state must decide quickly.

If the forfeits stand, then my team is in the playoffs. Friday’s game against the hated rival is for 2nd place and a home playoff game. But they will play a playoff game regardless.

Now, if the state over-rules the forfeits, then my team probably has to win to earn any playoff berth. No home game possible.

But it would still be possible, if another team loses, to make the playoffs with a 5 game losing streak.

So, my question is, goodness isn’t this more complicated than it has to be? We used to just figure Gardner points and then be happy.

Gardner Points? Look it up. That means you, xsmommy. It’s part of your heritage. ;-)

This is one of those internet holes. You’ll never find “Gardner Points” and make sense of it.

100 points for a win, plus extra for each of the losing teams wins, etc.

It’s there.

I would hope that the ruling will come behind the bracketing. So, the State can rule positive for the offender, but have them lose anyway.

P.S. You might want to...take a little hand in the game. I’ve found this to be useful a couple times the last two years.....

At halftime or on the quarter, visiting teams huddle (at least here) at either end of the field. Coaches have to speak clearly, to get points across. Wander over prior to the break, listen in, and pass the coaching points to your guys.

Yes, it’s a little kooky, but it does incorporate a method of figuring Strength of Schedule, better than the NFL does. The NFL relies on the previous years record for opponents. Instead of this years reality.

Sorry—I pinged myself instead of the group.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
But if you keep doing that you could go blind!

Well, it’s generally best to taper off once you need glasses.

Take it from one that is as blind as a bat.

It’s strange that it is something that exists and yet has no Wikipedia entry.

Before they had any playoffs they would use Gardner points to determine a champion after the season was over.

Seems strange.

They also once determined a champion when a title game ended in a tie by awarding it to the team with the most offensive yards. No overtime then.

No Wiki, but several other explanations.

Like I said, after reading it, I think the NFL should use it as a tiebreaker instead of stregnth of schedule.
