Amid Rising Discord Over Indian Images, F.S.U. Has Harmony
The New York Times ^ | 23 Oct 2013 | MIKE TIERNEY

Before every kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., a Florida State student in facial war paint and an American Indian costume steers a spotted Appaloosa to midfield. As the horse rises on its hind legs, the rider, who is not an Indian, thrusts a flaming spear into the turf to the crazed accompaniment of the crowd’s droning chant and an arm gesture called the tomahawk chop.

Saturday will be different, though, but not because a nationwide debate is swirling around the Washington Redskins’ nickname or because some universities have re-examined their depiction of Native American culture.

Remaining unimpeachable, a 35-year ritual at Seminoles football games will merely be tweaked so the fiery weapon can be handed off and flung by the former coach Bobby Bowden.

There will probably not be a peep of protest.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida has granted written permission for the university to borrow symbols of its heritage. While other tribes have pressed institutions to amend certain traditions or abandon nicknames and logos, Florida State enjoys the imprimatur of its sports teams’ namesake.

“We Seminoles embrace that mascot,” Chief James Billie, the tribe’s chairman, said. “They honor us.”

' Regarding opposition from American Indians outside Florida, Billie summons the notion of tribal self-determination, with each Indian people setting its own course.

“We tell them to go back to their own territory,” he said. “Leave us alone. This is my place, my home.” '

IMO The most exciting pre-game display in college football.

LSU used to have a caged tiger on the sidelines. But gone.

"Native Americans" aren't native to the Americas. They are descendants of the Siberian hunter groups who crossed the Bering Strait (when it was a solid land mass) from east-most Siberia, north of China, and migrated southward to populate all of the Americas THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS (Hear Carl Sagan and his "billions and billions of stars") of years ago.

College athletics are the BEST.
High school games aren't very GOOD, so it's not THAT much fun to watch them. The kids are too young to be too good.

Pro games are just too smooth and perfect, no surprises.

College games are perfect as the athletes are old and mature enough to play GOOD games but NOT so good as to make the game hohum...always possibilities of surprises in college games.
They have the ENERGY of high school and the know-how, almost, of the pros.

NOTHING in this WORLD is more exciting than a college basketball game...and I hate basketball.

Very proud of my alma mater for continuing this proud tradition. It is considered the highest possible honor at Florida State to be chosen as Chief Osceola. The man is considered a God in the community.

I understand your point. It depends on classification, we could be OOA, OOE, or whatever your world view is.

The whole controversy is SO silly.
One ALWAYS names their team and mascot after something they ADMIRE and ASPIRE to emulate.

Tigers, Braves, Warriors, Lions, Jets, Dolphins, Patriots, Even the Redskins, are POSITIVE names.

I can’t imagine naming a team after something ignoble or stupid. here are some Team names You will probably never see:

The New Jersey Jerk-offs
The Sarasota Sissies
The Atlanta A$$h*les
The Cincinnati Crybabies
The Boston Bedwetters
The Tampa Tattlers
The Minnesota Mice
The Rochester Ratfinks
The Washington Worms
The Milwaukee Maggots

I mean...it just ain’t gonna happen!

The only rising discord is that stirred by the MSM.

While not nearly in the same category as LSU, the MEMPHIS Tigers still have a live tiger in a cage on the field during games.

His name is T.O.M. (Tigers of Memphis)

Beautiful animal. Pampered and seriously cared for.

Go Tigers!

only octogenarians apply

OOE =
only otters effervesce
olive oil everywhere
order octopus entrails
Orion offs ermines
orifices often explode
