Secession is not an option in California
Sacramento News and Review ^ | 10-24-13 | Not attributed

It goes without saying that Modoc and Siskiyou counties aren’t going to secede from California. Their county supervisors have passed resolutions expressing the desire to form a new State of Jefferson, and by some reports, Shasta, Lassen and Redding counties are considering similar measures. But actual secession would require approval from the state Legislature and Congress, and that’s not a realistic possibility—fortunately for the secessionists.

Like many of the state’s remote rural areas, Modoc and Siskiyou have aging populations, high poverty rates and few jobs. They get far more money in state services than they pay in taxes. The government is the largest employer, accounting for more than one in three paychecks. Secession would be a complete disaster for them.

So what’s behind the secession “movement”? Essentially, irresponsible conservative politicians and a handful of activists who find it easier to paint the government as the source of all evil than to address the need for economic development, lack of health care, substance abuse and other issues facing rural Northern California.

Opting out of the state won’t solve any of these problems. It’s time for the secessionists to drop the theatrics and work with the rest of California for the future of their counties.

Have you noticed that the stories and editorials about secession have been in largely leftwing spin? That's just what's out there (a lot of which I can't post on FR).

If these people take so much state money, then you would be doing yourself a favor, California.

They divide the state in the wrong direction. Cut in half, north south, giving the Central Valley San Diego for a port and the coast can have Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Then we will see just who has the money.

Not necessarily. West Virginia set precedence when it seceded from Virginia without Virginia’s approval.

Poor Leftists. They just don’t get it that part of CA could secede and become a tax haven and the jobs would flood in.

Or maybe they do get it and they’re scared.

No questioning in this piece of liberal policies or their unintended consequences for other counties. I guess the utopian liberals could never be responsible for any bad outcomes. /sarc

The fear this actually happening and know they can’t continue to fund their utopian ideas without someone working to pay for them. If counties leave the state, who will pay the bills? The liberal jurisdictions would collapse and they know it.

Seems a bit bass-ackwards, IMO. The essence of secession is that societal neighbors cannot agree on components of governance, and the best course of action is for them to exist apart from one another. A process that requires the party desirous of secession to gain the agreement of the party that does not want the split seems...just wrong.

For my part, 150 States carved out of the current 50 would be a great start. That would go a long way toward returning some semblance of ‘balance’ to this Grand Experiment.

They get far more money in state services than they pay in taxes.

No one can imagine anyone walking away from all those great state services.

Who would want to govern themselves when all those great state services are just sitting there, ripe for the taking.

Shasta, Lassen and Redding counties...

There is no Redding County. Redding is a city and the county seat of Shasta County.

No wonder they want to secede. Sacramento journalists don't even know they exist.

Please do. Let em go. My sister-in-law’s step-brother lives out there now. I would love to see that little punk “gay boy” float away to the far ends of the earth. He has fooled her for years. I was not fooled when I saw him a few years back. I have shook hands with 6 year old girls that had a better grip than this sissy does.

West Virginia and Congress got the approval of the Virginia state government that the federal government recognized at the time.

And prohibit these state legislative conferences where states actually TRY to equalize their laws. It monkey wrenches the entire labs of democracy concept if the state laws are all intentionally made to be identical, plus allowing them to be more dictatorial than the average would be if they weren’t harmonized. If the laws are all the same, no one gets to vote with their feet, and dollars, so there’s no incentive to govern least or with the consent of the governed.
