Secession is not an option in California
Sacramento News and Review ^ | 10-24-13 | Not attributed

It goes without saying that Modoc and Siskiyou counties aren’t going to secede from California. Their county supervisors have passed resolutions expressing the desire to form a new State of Jefferson, and by some reports, Shasta, Lassen and Redding counties are considering similar measures. But actual secession would require approval from the state Legislature and Congress, and that’s not a realistic possibility—fortunately for the secessionists.

Like many of the state’s remote rural areas, Modoc and Siskiyou have aging populations, high poverty rates and few jobs. They get far more money in state services than they pay in taxes. The government is the largest employer, accounting for more than one in three paychecks. Secession would be a complete disaster for them.

So what’s behind the secession “movement”? Essentially, irresponsible conservative politicians and a handful of activists who find it easier to paint the government as the source of all evil than to address the need for economic development, lack of health care, substance abuse and other issues facing rural Northern California.

Opting out of the state won’t solve any of these problems. It’s time for the secessionists to drop the theatrics and work with the rest of California for the future of their counties.

But which wasn’t the real one, obviously, because one the feds approved of would never have been elected by the voters.

They could join Nevada. Parts of Oregon could too.

You’re right about that...The coast, L.A. and Sicko wouldn’t last five years.

The “real” state government would be one that wasn’t shooting at the rest of the country, at least according to the thinking of the day. After the war, in any event, there wasn’t going to be any going back.

But the “recognized” state government was not the real state government. The real state government was part of the Confederacy.

” It’s time for the secessionists to drop the theatrics and work with the rest of California for the future of their counties.”

In other words, bow to the will of the perverts, socialists, abortionists, and homos.

Doesn’t mean it requires that....we didn’t get approval from King George when we all seceeded, now did we???

Secession means never having to say “please” and “may we” again.....

It was the “real” state of the US. What that other thing was, wasn’t really relevant. It wasn’t recognized by the US government.

Agree about the not going back. Not sure whether secession (of the state from the US) had common support or not. I assume it did, and I therefore would tend to view the Confederate government of VA as the legitimate one, but I certainly have no problem with WV for seceding at the state level and staying with the Union if a majority there desired to (as evidently they did).

What can you say? Weird things happen politically when people start shooting at each other.

Incorrect, the people of Virginia were not represented by the “recognized state government”. Therefore the people of the counties who would like to secede from California could form their own state government without the input of the rest of California and demand to be recognized, too.

Assuming they either let you go without a fight or that you win the one that ensues.

Redding is the county seat of Shasta county.

Redding is full of welfare cheats, but it used to be a farm town.

I would think that anyone serious about secession would contemplate that it would be difficult and perhaps result in a fight, of some kind....

The Left in California don’t understand the idea of secession. It means getting AWAY from the problem, not making it bigger.

Back before the enviro-NAZI destroyed the lumber business, they were booming wealthy counties, but now jobs are illegal up there. all their problems are government-caused.

Unfortunately, the people who cause wars almost never have to fight in them.

What the writer doesn’t tell you is, if these counties could get out from under the repressive liberal policies, folks living there could be very prosperous and provide for themselves.

Secession means never having to say “please” and “may we” again.....

In other words, it means war.

The problem with all this secession thinking is that the emotionalism counts for more than anything practical.

It's not enough to change your status through a constitutional, you have to have all the emotional satisfaction of making a scene.
