In a nation obsessed with the right now, few things have held up over the past 50 years as well as the Ford Mustang. The first pony car debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and instantly became a tent pole of Americana. Before the model officially turns 50 on April 17, 2014, Ford will celebrate its lasting contribution to the postwar-boom culture with a brand-new, much anticipated Mustang.

But the times, they are a changin’ (yep, a song also released in 1964). Ford’s American icon continues to gain offshore admirers. The Blue Oval plans to sell the next Mustang globally, and to appease overseas buyers, the car will need to be lighter and more efficient. But that’s not to say that traditional fans will be disappointed.

310 hp 4 banger...that’s robust...light front end...improved handling....promising news from the blue oval.

exterior dimensions will shrink ever so slightly

Thank God. The current one is the size and general shape of an M1 Abrams tank.

would prefer a straight 6, Overhead Cam, belt driven with a six-pack and turbo charged. But a 4 cyl with 310 horsepower isn’t too shabby.

Not sure it is a good idea to try to 300 + HP out of a 4 banger.

Nothing will ever replace the sound a big V-8 with old fashion 4 barrel carbs, headers, and good sized cam.

With electronics you have good control over detonation and temperatures. If things get rowdy you quickly back off the turbo boost for a while.

The whole shape is pretty close to a Taurus.

My wife has a 2013 Taurus and it has a lot of *stang* looks to it, now they are giving the *stang* a Taurus look, WTH?

Design team getting lazy??

I do see that, but overall I still think it's pretty nice, including the snake eyes that others don't like.

Seems all automobile manufactures are going with the evil look. A sign of the times I suspect. The Japanese started the trend, but have a more angular and futurist look, rather than this ominous attribute.

Various aspects of Car and Driver's render aren't correct. Chazcron over at mustang6g.com has a more accurate render.

See below for differences between the two renders.

I saw the new Mustang, or close to it, at a Car Survey I was invited to. You had to go through a Metal Detector to make sure you didn’t have a camera and no Cell Phones allowed.

I currently drive a 2011 Mustang. It’s been a great car.

The 2015 Mustang is a real step up, but it does have the Ford Corporate look grill. The retro front end is gone, and I hear that some in the Industry blame that for the slow Mustang Sales. I disagree, but I’m an old guy.

The big plus is the revised Interior and the Independent Rear Suspension. My old 1999 Mustang Cobra had IRS, but it was not well engineered. It was an add on to the old Fox Platform, not built into the Platform Design.

My first impression when first seeing the car was, I gotta get me one of those. The front Grill and Headlights were the only letdowns, but Ford is appealing to a new generation with a modern look. I could get used to it.

They had the current Competitors there as well, They all look dated, including the Camaro. BTW - The revised 2014 Camaro styling really sucks IMHO. I have no idea what they were thinking.

It looks like the beancounters took over the design department, again. If you want a re-bodied Taurus, just buy a Taurus, and save some money.
As for performance, trying to re-invent the flathead with OHC heads ala the modular motor was doomed from the get go. Putting grenade four bangers in them isn’t going to improve things any. Oh, and did I mention that the thing looks like an import tuner’s wet dream of a new mazda?

I like most of the exterior...but I really despise those low-profile tires.

I had the pleasure of driving one of the newer Mustangs a few years back. While the interior wasn’t much that thing moved!!! Chirping tires, handling and OOMPH. And...it was an airport rental (at a smaller airport) Must’ve had a V-8 because others we got from airports weren’t any where NEAR the power of that first one.

With European and federal fuel-economy standards in mind, Ford will introduce the first turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang since the 1986 SVO model. And the engine will be the same size, 2.3 liters, as that car’s four-banger.

Bzzzzz.....wrong.

I owned a 1980 Mustang with a 2.3 litre Turbo charged 4 cyl. engine. It was the one with the TRX suspension and Michelins. Nice little car.

That side view riminds me a bit of my Scion FRS. But I’ll take my Scion any day of the week over a ‘Stang. But that is because, for me, smaller and lighter is better. I like driving a comfortable go-cart every day on my 122 mile round trip commute on twisties through cornfields and cattle pastures.

Personally, I think it is gorgeous. And there is nothing wrong with the similarity to the other Fords. I used to own a 1972 Vega GT. Loved to drive it but it was a piece of crap. However, even back then I understood the Chevrolet “branding” going on. Look at the headlights and grill of any Chevrolet product from that year. They are intentionally similar. And they are doing it today with the horizontally split grille. Kia does it too with their grill these days.

I would expect every ford to look like it was a Ford product, even without the blue oval.

This new mustang is lovely. I really do like how they threw off the retro shackles without losing the Mustang look.

Of course, opinions do vary. ;-)
