The Difference Between Being a Slut & a Racist: Pochahottie Hottentot
Indian Country Today ^ | Ruth Hopkins

Posted on 11/01/2013 10:31:11 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Ahh, yes. Halloween is just around the corner. Time for pumpkin carving, Trick-Or-Treating, and women dressed like two-dollar hookers wearing headdresses. What better way to celebrate the ancient pagan feast of Samhain, where the spirits of the dead roam free, than to wear slutty costumes that reduce people of other races to stereotypical hypersexualized caricatures. After all, why keep the embarrassment and denigration all to yourself?

Wait…what?

Lindsay Lohan said it best in Mean Girls: “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything.”

Say what you will about whether using Halloween as an excuse to advertise your goodies is right or wrong, but I can assure you of one thing: dressing as a sexy pirate, a hot nurse or even a slutty pizza slice, is not the same thing as dressing up as a sexy Indian princess, cheeky Cherokee or naughty Navajo. They aren’t just examples of having a little fun with patriarchy (and figuratively slapping Susan B. Anthony and your grandmother in the face simultaneously). It’s racist.

Native Americans are not costumes, we’re human beings. The traditional clothing we wear is called regalia, and looks nothing like the faux 1950’s Hollywood shit that pop culture pawns off on consumers as “Indian.” All Native American people are not the same. There are 566 federally recognized Native American Tribes in the United States. Each possesses its own distinct culture, language, heritage, and land base. Furthermore, we don’t take kindly to non-Natives debasing our sacred objects. The war bonnet, for example, is reserved for Native American warriors and chiefs who’ve fought bravely for their people. Each feather in a war bonnet symbolizes a single act of courage in the face of death and destruction- and no, fielding crowds of sweaty, irritable shoppers to buy a fake headdress at Spirit Halloween doesn’t count. War bonnets are more akin to Purple Hearts.

As a Native American, I can’t tell you what an absolute pain it is to traverse through aisles of costumes this time of year, especially with children in tow. Mommy doesn’t like explaining why Party City is selling a “Cheeky Cherokee” teen costume that promises to send its wearers “heading for the woods,” or why Spirit Halloween is displaying a “Naughty Navajo” mini dress that will have women “sending out smoke signals.”

Like any decent parent, I try to teach my daughter to carry herself with pride and dignity. These racist costumes, that specifically target her purely because of her race, send her the message that Native American women are viewed as sex objects. It makes her sad and angry. She knows those costumes are not who we as Native women are, and that we should not be depicted that way. Statistically, a shocking one in three Native American women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Encouraging the public to view Native American women as disposable sex toys is more than a grave insult, it’s irresponsible and negligent.

Speaking of negligent, Cherokee and Navajo are the names of sovereign tribal nations. There could be trademarks involved. Last year, the Navajo Nation filed a lawsuit against Urban Outfitters for just that, and violations against the federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act, after the tribe discovered they were selling their now infamous “Navajo” hipster panty and flask. Party City, Spirit Halloween, and anyone else who uses the names of tribes to sell their wares without the tribe’s permission is hereby put on notice. You could be engaging in illegal activity.

Who makes these costumes anyway? Party City mentions online that its products are manufactured “both in the United States and overseas.” I shudder to think that an Indigenous child in some far off land is being made to slave over a costume used to appropriate Indigenous peoples in this country.

The other day, a clueless non-Native miscreant told me that “Native women are sexy,” and that’s why non-Native women try to emulate them. Excuse me if I’m not flattered, and here, hold my purse while I kick him in the nuts. He did have a point though, in that white men have fetishized and eroticized women of other races and ethnicities throughout history, leading white women to imitate those features. One such case is that of Sarah Baartman, an African tribeswoman and former slave who was exhibited in freak show attractions in Europe in the early 1800s. Sarah was kind, intelligent, and spoke several languages, but that’s not what she was known for. She was displayed so white men could gawk at her large buttocks and elongated vaginal labia. Seen purely as an object of sexual gratification, Sarah was called the Hottentot Venus. The popularity of Sarah’s sizeable posterior is believed to be the chief inspiration behind the bustles that became so fashionable in Europe soon after her arrival.

Racism and misogyny are interwoven. The hypersexualization of Native women through slutty red face costumes is a prime example of that. Native women are not your sexual playthings, nor should we be mocked and marginalized because of our race. So yeah, go be a sexy ghost, but leave my people out of it.

Crap! Now I’m offended for being classified as a horn dog looking to subjugate women of other races. WHAT? I guess that’s just what white guys do.

Yeah - like no OTHER culture or race has ever done this...

in that white men have fetishized and eroticized women of other races and ethnicities throughout history,

This author needs a discussion on how indians kept slaves (before ever seeing a white man), practiced genocide (before ever seeing a white man), environmental destruction (before ever seeing a white man) AND...

that the vast majority of indian tribes fought on the side of the British during the American Revolution.

Who cares what you think.

Your side lost and yet we still celebrate your culture in movies, song(Cherokee Nation), parties, sport and war.

Tomahawk missile? Badass but, your feeling have been injun’d.

Apache Helicopter? Kickass but, you claim injunree to yer pride.

Comanchee Helicopter? See above.

Kiowa? Ditto

If you and your people want to go tbe way of the Roman Gods then we can agree to never celebrate your existence or even speak of it.

Pretty soon you are not just irrelevant but, no longer a part of our culture and thus, you become invisible and irrelevant.

The last time we visited Cherokee North Carolina there were multiple men dressed in “full regalia” as chiefs available to have their photo taken with the kids, for tips, as the “chief” reminded us. Their “war bonnets” were the same cheap stuff available in the local stores.
I can understand how such cheap knockoffs could be offensive, but then why were they selling it?!

Funny that Ms. Easily Offended doesn't mention that most, nearly ALL, of these rapes will be committed by a Native American man of their own tribe! Stupid bitch should just keep her mouth shut and be offended!

"The traditional clothing we wear is called regalia, and looks nothing like the faux 1950’s Hollywood shit that pop culture pawns off on consumers as “Indian.” All Native American people are not the same."

OK, so this genius just undermined her whole argument.

If it's "faux Hollywood shit", that doesn't represent real Indians, then how can someone be "offended"?

It's "faux shit", man...

She tells that “all Native Americans are not the same” then decides that she is the voice for all Native Americans and decides what offends them.

Apparently, I am a very convincing Hasidic Jew. Best they’d ever seen.

Wow! So I guess the peaceful Native Americans who never waged war on each other only created the War Bonnet after the evil Europeans arrived.

The traditional clothing we wear is called regalia

Sorry, sweetie, it's not.

Regalia refers to the symbols and ornaments worn by a king, as it's from the Latin rex.

What you wear is called a traditional costume, and just about every ethnic group on earth has one or more. But most of them don't get their loincloths all bunched up over someone else wearing or imitating it.

Needs more cow-bell.

She’s in a position to know better than I do, but doesn’t mention that the Plains Indian headdress was worn in modern times by other tribes who had never worn it, as an expression of American Indian identity, in a somewhat similar way to Celts like the Welsh and Cornish wearing kilts.
