Typhoon Haiyan makes Sandy, Katrina look like weak cousins

What may be the fiercest typhoon in recorded history smashed into the Philippines early Friday morning, carrying winds that make Superstorm Sandy look like a weak relative. Even Hurricane Katrina, the modern measure of nature’s disastrous force on the United States, pales when compared to the punch and expected devastation from Typhoon Haiyan.

According to the latest report, Haiyan, also known as Yolanda in the Philippines, was packing winds in excess of 200 mph as it homed in on the island nation in the western Pacific Ocean. The U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said maximum sustained winds in the Category 5 storm were 195 mph with gusts to 235 mph.

Where is Bush? Not vacationing in the Philippines, I hope.

Last I heard there were 4 dead. Not that I want more, but that’s all for ‘the worst storm ever’ the media have hyped?

I heard 56.

They haven’t even begun to assess damage yet, let alone come up with a body count.

“carrying winds that make Superstorm Sandy look like a weak relative.”

Well yeah, Sandy was a “post tropical cyclone” with 80 mph winds when it hit the USA coast. It IS a weak relative.

We all call it s Superstorm because we learned that stuff built on sand near the coast since the Hurricane of 1938 does not stand up to a storm surge, and it was very costly.

Like I posted before, we have a branch in the RP. They get hit by typhoons and super typhoons like crazy, and they make Katrina and Sandy look like a spring rain.

The difference is that unlike limp-wristed Americans, even they know thousands will die, they simply re-build...and they don’t need no effing’ “benefit concert’ to help them out.

You can’t go out during a Hurricane and collect the dead. It is almost certain that the actual number of dead will be in the hundreds, if not thousands.

Might be indelicate to mention this first, but that’s one fierce anchor chick they’ve got...
I pray for the people of the Phillipines..get them through this with as little harm to the populace as possible.

Typhoons, hurricanes, storms: they've been around since the beginning of earth.

Haiyan isn't going to end the earth. None of the hurricanes do. It will simply DRENCH the Philippines. The Philippines can handle it, like they've handled the zillions of previous hurricanes.

Don't you think?

And these are islands. Some of the dead may never be found. The surge was huge in some areas.

I’m going to stick my neck out here and declare that these storms are the result of global warming. Then I’m going to say it again and again and again until you believe me.

There are over 7,000 islands in the Philippines, of which around 2,000 are inhabited. Many are now completely cut off from outside communication. It’ll be a long time if ever before we know the full scope of the damage.

What may be the fiercest typhoon in recorded history

What is the criteria for recorded history? Some facts would be nice. Like a time line.

"how is al gore gonna explain the recent super storm in south dakota with 5 feet of snow, then explain this typhoon? you can’t have it both ways."

Al Gore will blame it on Global Cooling. You must have cooling before you have Global Warming. The Global Warming can now be blamed on Global Cooling. But Global Cooling has been Blamed on Global Warming by Al Gore. So man-made Global Warming is causing man-made Global Cooling. And man-made Global Cooling is causing man-made Global Warming. And simply being born, and being alive and living a normal existence is destroying the Earth and the Earth's climate.

Ergo the human race must eliminate four fifths of its population in order to save the Earth and the Universe. Do all of you evil humans now understand why you must all die from ObamaCare?

You’d think they’d wait until they could do so instead of reporting “4”.

I wonder which newser will blame global warming first?
