You are naive, in my view, if you think prior convictions should not be taken into account in sentencing. I am ok with calling this a conviction for habitual theft.
I have seen that show Bait Car, and on at 2 occasions the guy who stole the car tearfully tells the cops, “Don’t arrest me, this is my third strike.” If the guy in the story knew this would be his third strike, he knew the consequences and deserves what he got.
he didn’t run a stop sign or any innocent transgression. he had to have know that he was stealing, and he had to have known that he had a record and would get nailed had he been caught.
i have limited sympathy for career criminals who reap the benefit of their chosen lifestyle
Just a follow up. That neighbor was arrested in August for selling heroin, and we live on the same block as a middle school. two days ago I saw him at his mother’s house and it turns out, he was given a suspended sentence for eight years, due to the courts ordering California to reduce its prison population. He is already out, and I am writing letters this time, I am done with phone calls.
