Skip to comments.New Warning: Morning-After Pill Doesn't Work for Women Over 176 Pounds

An FDA spokeswoman tells Mother Jones the agency is evaluating whether to require US emergency contraceptive pill makers to change their labels.
The European manufacturer of an emergency contraceptive pill identical to Plan B, also known as the morning-after pill, will warn women that the drug is completely ineffective for women who weigh more than 176 pounds and begins to lose effectiveness in women who weigh more than 165 pounds. HRA Pharma, the French manufacturer of the European drug, Norlevo, is changing its packaging information to reflect the weight limits. European pharmaceutical regulators approved the change on November 10, but it has not been previously reported.
This development has implications for American women. Some of the most popular emergency contraceptive pills sold over the counter in the United Statesincluding the one-pill drugs Plan B One-Step, Next Choice One Dose, and My Way, and a number of generic two-pill emergency contraceptiveshave a dosage and chemical makeup identical to the European drug. Weight data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that, at 166 pounds, the average American woman is too heavy to use these pills effectively.

Ever been inside a Wal-Mart, dollar store or mall? That’s half the women in this country. I weigh 340 and I regularly see young women who weigh the same or more than I do in many venues.
Never heard of a larger dose?
Not to be insensitive, but a gal in excess of 176 lbs is freakin' HUGE.
Is there a height limit?
Not a lot of healthy people walking around compared to the past. I need to drop about 40 myself.
The only way it works is if I restrain myself from feeding the pie hole. Not easy.
I’ll probably get Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass next year before I lose my legs and eyesight. You have to jump through some hoops, but it’s free.
I know all the right things to do.
Fastest health diet thing I know of is Medifast. Cheaper than eating regular food and it is balanced to not have you become diabetic trying to lose the weight. Keeps the sugar levels normal while losing the weight.
It was working for me and I got lazy and went back to some over eating.
It is always over eating and it is worse if you pick bad things to over eat.
This development has implications for American women....
I think if they are over 176 lbs, they don’t need the after morning pill.
“but a gal in excess of 176 lbs is freakin’ HUGE. “
Might be okay if she’s about 6’4” tall.
Horrible news!!!! who doesnt love a huge girl
I can just see MO ramping up her “Let’s Moooooooove” campaign even harder. “Gotsa get dem b*tches down to da liiiiiine.”
Aw gee. They will need to give out Michelle Obama Let’s Move videos with those pills.
I am already a diabetic. Gastric bypass is being reported to cure diabetes ON THE TABLE due to changes made in your gut.
How Does Gastric Bypass Surgery Cure Type 2 Diabetes?
How Does Bariatric Surgery Cure Type II Diabetes? The hypothesis of a pathogenic insulin analogue that interferes with the function of endogenous insulin causing insulin resistance and NIDDM
No way I'm going there.
So is Michelle right? We do have an obesity problem in this country?
Me, for one. I love my wife. All 105 lbs of her.
A diabetic or larger than me? If I had to guess, I’d say she’s somewhere between 240 and 260lbs and probably a diabetic, as blacks are more susceptible than any other race, IIRC.
Let me guess...they are going to mandate that no women on birth control can weigh over 176 lbs?
Well, many people can’t realistically use this “morning after pill” then.
Not really. If you have long hair and a decent rack, that adds pounds. My hair is to my waist and I’m pretty busty, and at 5’9”, 176 isn’t that big.
I think a lot depends on how you carry your weight.
Sounds real good.
At 5’ 9”, a woman weighing 176 can indeed look mighty fine. At 5’ 2”, not so much.
No, it isn't free. You may find a clever way to bypass payment for gastric bypass surgery. However, hard working taxpayers will have to pick up the tab for your lack of self restraint. No thanks.
Yeah, my “clever way to bypass payment” was to become disabled in the service of my country. Pretty slick, huh?
“.... the drug is completely ineffective for women who weigh more than 176 pounds..”
So 175 lbs it’s ok...?
Not sure 176lb woman would need it anyway....
Dude cut the carbs and you will lose that weight.
For women above 175, plan A still works pretty good.
Not huge anymore. Kids these days are growing really large. Some of the girls in my son's high school are a full head taller than me, do not look overweight at all and probably weight 200 lbs or more.
The trick is to hold one between your knees on the morning before.
Oops, I smell a class action lawsuit. Another friendly lawyer commercial to ruin your daytime tv viewing pleasure.
How do it know?
Uh-oh. Someone needs to tell Sandra Fluke.
my daughter is a touch over 5’ 12”. She is a three time NCAA Div 3 Trophy winning swimmer - freestyle and butterfly sprints and relays.
she is in tip top shape, looks amazing like all top swimmers ... and weighs generally 165-169 #.
Her boyfriend is a NCAA heavyweight wrestler who weighs in around 240 and looks like he’s been chiseled.
I am 6’ 4” not BAD shape for my age and push 240 ...
Now, who is fat?
you sound like my wife. 5 10, nice figure (ahem ...) looks great. she would be skinny skinny at 135. she looks great at [ redacted ] - a real woman and a great Mom.
For a girl above 5'7" or so and in good shape, she can look okay at that weight.
The real issue is the morning after pill. It's got to have a devastating impact causing an increase in STDs and "friendly coercion" sex. Human nature and hormones are what they are, after all.
A female friend of mine got RnY surgery and it ruined her health. She wishes she had gone for lap band now, but it’s done. Monthly blood work and iron infusions. She still vomits a lot even after 5 years. It’s really been awful for her. She was obese before, but not unhealthy like today. And she has stopped losing weight short of her goal.
Sometimes, you are in the group of not so good outcomes.
Nah, 176 pounds is enough woman for me.
That’s what I was thinking...
175 - works
175.8 - works
175.9 - works
176 - works
176.00001 - doesn’t work
A larger dose increases the risk of the woman bleeding without stopping.
If you’re over 276 LBS ,there’s no need for a morning before, during, or after pill.
