ISON broke up going around the SUN, if anything survived it they are rocky pieces. They are not heading toward Earth, the pieces would stay on the same trajectory as ISON was......headed out into interstellar space, never to return.

We shall see.
In the breakup, as those large pieces of a well over 5 miles in diameter comet come apart, trajectories change.
The gravitational pull of Venus, our moon, and our Earth, all tug on those pieces and affect their destination.
Think you safe?
Be prepared.
What is the impact energy of a piece traveling well over 300,000 miles per hour?
They're changing terminology from "Meteorite Shower" to "Meteorite Storm".

How man "rocks" does it take, to make up a comet well lover 5 miles in size?
How small do you think those remaining "rocks" are?

Astronomers estimated that the original Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 ( formally designated D/1993 F2 ) may have had a nucleus up to 5 km (3.1 mi) across .
Astronomers estimated that the visible fragments of SL9 ranged in size from a few hundred metres to two kilometres across.
21 distinct impacts were observed, with the largest coming on July 18 at 07:33 UTC when fragment G struck Jupiter.
This impact created a giant dark spot over 12,000 km across, and was estimated to have released an energy equivalent to 6,000,000 megatons of TNT (600 times the world's nuclear arsenal).[17]

Now since Comet Ison is estimated to be on slightly smaller than Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 was, WHY WOULDN'T THE DAMAGE (if it breaks up) BE ANY DIFFERENT ?
And if Comet Ison breaks up, can we expect its path to change, given the extra venting gases created by more surface areas to be heated up ?
And would the breaking up of Comet Ison speed up or slow down the shattered pieces velocity on its continued path out away from the Sun?
Or would it totally change the exit point in its slingshot around the Sun to widen the orbit out ?

How would a crushed Comet Ison compare to the Tunguska event or the space rock that carved Meteor Crater in Arizona ?

The Tunguska event was an enormously powerful explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 07:14 KRAT (00:14 UT) on June 30 [O.S. June 17], 1908.[1][2][3]
The explosion, having the epicentre (60.886°N, 101.894°E), is believed to have been caused by the air burst of a small asteroid or comet at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) above Earth's surface.
Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the object's size, on the order of 60 m (200 ft) to 190 m (620 ft).[4]
It is the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history.
(It is classified as an impact even though the asteroid or comet is believed to have burst in the air rather than hitting the surface.)[5]

The space rock that carved Meteor Crater in Arizona -- 570 feet deep and 4,100 feet (1.25 kilometers) across -- was blown into existence 50,000 years ago by an asteroid roughly 130 feet (40 meters) wide.

So, like Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9,
WHY shouldn't we worry about the possibilities of the damage the rubble from Comet Ison could do to our World,
if not on this pass, then on the next return trip into our orbit (who know how many years from now) ?

I found these videos that have very good information from the Deep Impact Discovery Mission to Comet Tempel 1 and I thought they might be worth our time.

Orbital mechanics.
That’s why.
It isn’t heading our way at all.
Cometary debris streams follow defined paths.
That is how meteor showers are predicted and defined.
The debris streams tend to stay in predictable locations.
Right now we are entering two streams, quadrantids and geminids.

No, they aren’t over 5 miles in diameter. How does a 1.5 km diameter comet, turn into pieces that are 5 miles in diameter?

The only gravity that matters is when ISON sling-shot around the sun breaking up, the pieces still travel in the same direction ISON was going. Nothing was there to knock it off course.

Well ISON is supposed to pass directly over the North Pole, 41 million miles straight up.

And the last pictures of it show a debris trail twice the width of the sun, so about 1.5 million miles.

But ISON still has 80 million miles to go to reach us, and the 1.5 million mile debris trail is expanding like a shotgun blast.

So the big question is, how wide will it spread?

Not wide enough to be a threat to earth.
Plus, space is a very large place.
Ison would have to violate physics to be a threat.
We are more threatened by November omega orionids than by the debris of ison.

Again, not wide enough to be a threat.
That v you are talking about is mostly volatiles.
A big yawn burger.
The dust likewise is a mostly yawnburger.
Look at the current November omega orionids.
They are a debris stream from a cometary source.
They are..a yawnburger.
Shows up real nice on radar.
But pathetic visually.
And that v ain’t aimed at us at all.
And won’t come anywhere near us.
Www.spaceweather.com for meteor shower info.

ISON or whatever is left of it IS NEVER EVER COMING BACK. IT DOESN’T HAVE AN ORBIT. It is HEADING OUT INTO INTERSTELLAR SPACE. Its trajectory cannot have changed, it is moving too fast, it sling-shot around the sun. ISON is/was moving at 151,088 mph. The only thing that could change its trajectory is a collision with another object going as fast. The trajectory is well established, it’s never coming back. ISON orbits nothing, unlike Halley’s comet which orbits our sun. There is nothing to worry about.

I am caught up..... that is how fast the comet would be moving right now, if it’s there. The hubble will be trying to locate it if it wasn’t completely vaporized in the next few weeks....and no it and none of its debris is going to come anywhere near Earth.

41 million miles is almost halfway to the SUN, ISON is no threat. You would get a better reception over at abovetopsecret.com. You’re a long time member of FR and I don’t really want to call you a kook, but you’re posting youtube videos of doom-porn. It is slightly irritating. You can research real science for yourself and understand orbital physics, space physics, comets, meteors, debris, trajectory, etc.

I highly recommend you keep up and follow BPEarthWatch.
Like any human being, he occasionally makes mistakes, but very seldom.
He's much more dependable about telling us the truth, over the garbage NASA is trying to sell us.

Ummmm....NASA has billions worth of better equipment, NASA employs astrophysicists that have studied space their entire lives. NASA put on a live show from the SOHO’s and SDO to watch ISON’s approach and grazing of the sun.

I’d trust NASA over an electrical engineer that probably has no experience with astrophysics. Except for the terrible videos he uploads to you-tube that are mostly just conjecture, with zero evidence to back up anything he says.

You can think what you want, but he's been ahead of them about the closeness of the pass over Mars and Mercury, and he's accurately predicted the Solar Flares much better than NASA.
Go back an check out his predictions about the "Deep Impact Discovery Mission to Comet Tempel 1" and how it would be in reference to the electrical interference, and the "prior to impact" static electric flash.
He was correct.

Yosemitest... I think this may mean that the FR moderator doesn't want Comet Ison articles in the "Extended News" sidebar. Probably only a site administrator could have removed the Topics that you placed on the article and then also moved it to one called "Religion & Science" (see just above Reply #1).

Your reference to the moderator as "some dummy" probably won't help you in this regard in the future.

And to Gamecock...

This article shows Religion forum up at the top right of this page, but I think that Religion & Science is a sub-topic of it, as their lists of recent articles are different (the URLs are different just after "tag/")

Assuming a comet is traveling on trajectory X and breaks up from gravitational forces while slingshotting around the Sun, it is mathematically impossible for all remnants to continue to travel on trajectory X. Furthermore, because the comet was broken up by gravitational forces, it is highly likely that these forces will act on each fragment differently, causing a new trajectory for each. This is the “shotgun pattern” you described. Any prediction of the future path of the remnants is impossible without knowing the mass of the remnant, and it’s exact position in the Sun’s field. Therefore
Anyone who tells you they know where the fragments of Comet Ison will go once they leave the Sun’s influence is arrogantly mistaken.

Of course you must realize that if ISON is travelling 300,000 mph that there is an enormous amount of inertia invested in its trajectory. Any splitting or bumping going on amongst the fragments will be negligible to the tragectory. If they were moving 3 mph, yes. But at 300,000 mph -no.

As it got closer to the Sun, the Sun's gravitation pull causer it to speed up

And as it gets further from the sun, the sun's gravitational pull will do what ... ??

(The correct answer is: "slow it back down". When it gets back out to the earth's orbit, it will have the same velocity it did when it originally crossed earth's orbit.)

I don't think so.
When the item is in motion and breaks up due to heat stress, or venting gas, or due to electric/magnetic field "attractions/explosions", all bets are off.

Let’s see about that shall we?

The only pertinent concern for comet ISON is on Jan 14 when we will pass through remnants of its incoming tail. That is the dust which was blown off during its inbound journey and was sufficiently slowed by the solar wind to still be in the vicinity of earth on Jan 14. Ergo, the particles must be small enough for the force of the solar wind to have counter-balanced its incoming speed -which was very high. So anything encountered on Jan 14 will be incredibly small, likely microscopic, on a molecular scale. Anything larger, particularly anything large enough to become a bolide is too large to have been decelerated by the solar wind to still be in our orbital neighborhood.

At its closest approach on Dec 26 comet ISON will be 40 million miles from earth and above the solar plane heading into interstellar space at a high rate of speed.

I’ve been waiting for the incoming, because it is part of the 6th seal in Revelation.
1. the Conquerer
2. people kill each other
3. super inflation
4. 1/4 of the earth given to Death and Hades to kill with sword, famine, pestilence (including viruses), and wild animals
5. killing those who belong to the One True God of Israel
6. great Earthquake, blackened sun, red moon, “and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. And the sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” Rev 6:12-14 Men hide in caves because of the wrath of the Lamb.

No getting around that Father has given the Lamb that was slain the authority to have at it. He sees and hears the deaths of the unborn, and the rest of the abominations that cause desolation. Why be surprised when it all comes to pass?

Heh.
This is the same scaremongering that went on with comet elenin.
You have to believe that ison will somehow do something magically that violates physics and orbital mechanics to do what you are claiming.
Objects heading towards the sun speed up on the way in.
On the way back out they slow down by the same rate.
Ison is no different and will not violate those well known and established laws of motion.
Disagree all you want, but you would be just as wrong as the people who claimed comet elenin was going to kill us all.
