The finding could lead to mind-reading applications that, for example, would allow a patient who is rendered mute by a stroke to communicate via passive thinking. Conceivably, it could also lead to more dystopian outcomes: chip implants that spy on or even control peoples thoughts. Any fears of impending mind control are, at a minimum, premature, said Greely. Practically speaking, its not the simplest thing in the world to go around implanting electrodes in peoples brains. It will not be done tomorrow, or easily, or surreptitiously.
Parvizi agreed. Were still in early days with this, he said. If this is a baseball game, were not even in the first inning. We just got a ticket to enter the stadium.

If NSA could, they would.
I had a feeling you were going to post this.
See "Happy Hat":
Alternative wave forms can be transmitted inward, as required.
Were you reading my mind? Did you access my webcam?
Yes and yes. You typed taller than you are.
Well, it’s about time someone came up with a way to stop thoughtcrime.
Soon I will acquire your skills and there will be no need to post on this forum as it would be redundant.
I dare them! I dare the government to try and control my brai.........
Hope and change! Hope and change!
Intelligence is irrelevant
Reason is futile
You will be assimilated.
Hope and Change
James Woods narrates “Futurescape” on the science channel on Tuesday nights. Its about future technology and the research going on that’s directed toward it.
A recent episode was about “brain hacking” and its kind of freaky how much success they’re having. So far they can only tease out foggy shapes but they’ve been far more successful in pulling words out of thought.
Thanks for the tip.
A decade or more ago I would have called this impossible. However, one technology has changed this opinion.
Dragon software produces a product called “Naturally Speaking”. It is a voice to text application that keeps getting better and better. A decade or more ago, you would have to train the software to recognize your voice for several minutes, and even then, it was punctuated with errors. However, today’s version can adjust for unique voices in under a minute, with a low error rate.
This overcomes a huge obstacle to mind reading, assuming that when a person is thinking, they think in text.
To translate without text in the brain becomes a tradeoff of brainwaves, and how reliable they are in creating text. This means that you might get a similar effect, but it will take longer.
And that is where software learning comes into play.
Think of the advantage the Democrats would gain if they had one of these at their convention. They could turn it on and see what the delegates are thinking.....
“Twinkle, twinkle little star.”
“Women with walkers are really hot.”
“Four bucks for a weenie?”
“Lizzy Warren looks like a vanilla ice cream cone.”
“Somebody just grabbed my behind. Please let it be that hot girl from Oregon. Nope.....all guys again.”
“I think Hillary would make a good president.....of the local AA chapter.”
“John Kerry. It’s like they found out how to give a rock legs.”
“Oh no....it’s Obama.....and I didn’t get that bathroom break. The man drones on forever. Maybe I can hold it until somebody passes out. Then I can claim I peed my pants out of excitement. They’ll probably make me head delegate.”
You are being too kind.
