A Moorhead, Minn., hunter may have set a state record last month when he killed a large elk in northwestern Minnesota.

Brad Penas drew one of two elk tags for the Caribou herd in Kittson County, and he shot a 6x7 elk on September 14, the first day of the 2013 season.

The elk weighed 820 pounds field dressed, and the gross green score on the rack was 433 inches. The net green score after deductions was 391 inches

After the mandatory 60-day drying period, the elk could be the highest-scoring bull ever killed by a hunter in Minnesota.

820 lbs field dressed...wow! And has a spread the width of a Miata.

What did he harvest it with?

5.56 is too small for game that size.

Can’t even use is for deer in Colorado.

Described as “.270”, probably Winchester, a popular elk round.
He saw it before the season and was looking for it.

“Brad Penas drew one of two elk tags “

Not a great deal of competition.

That does not look like northern MN in November. Quite green and blue.

Hay it’s Minnesota, they never were much on competition
anyway. It seems that half their population has moved here
to Texas and are already whining about how we should be
more like they were “up north”.

Not too old to grace God’s creation with his magnificence. And now he is gone.

Must be tough growing up with a name like “Penas”. Good thing his first name isn’t Richard.
