Medical worker finally gets insurance on Obamacare website (or the free pony was worth the wait)
MSNBC ^ | 12/10/2013 | MSNBC

It took two months, weekly visits to the jammed-up federal website and a half-dozen phone calls, but JoAnn Smith finally got health insurance Monday. It’ll only cost her $3.19 a month to cover herself and her husband.

“I just instantly burst into tears,” she says.

Smith started working on getting insurance even before the federal website, HealthCare.gov, opened Oct. 1, pre-registering to get a headstart on the process. But, like millions of other Americans who tried, she was stymied by the website’s glitches.

She told NBC News her story last week, and as of Friday, a week after the federal website was supposed to have been much improved, Smith still could not get all the way through the process.

Smith, a 60-year-old medical transcriptionist in Clearwater, Fla., must use the federal website to buy health insurance because Florida opted not to run its own. She’s been without health insurance for years and had been looking forward to getting subsidized coverage for herself and her husband Eric, 56, who’s unemployed.

The 2010 Affordable Care Act aims to get health insurance to the 16 percent of Americans who don’t have any by helping some buy health insurance on new websites, and by widening Medicaid benefits to others. People have until Dec. 23 to sign up for health insurance that starts on the first possible day, Jan. 1. They have until March 31 to sign up and avoid paying a tax......

KEYWORDS:
While MSNBC is flacking for the administration, they overlook the fact that the people signing up in the news article are free pony people, heavily subsidized premiums and possibly pre existing conditions.A 61 year old enrollee who was able to sign up after two months of trying and whose premiums for her and her unemployed husband will be 3 bucks a month. The fouled up website they are trying to play down is small potatoes next to the real problem that the early enrollees are primarily folks getting subsidies and pre existing condition folks. Where are the stories about overjoyed healthy non subsidized people enrolling who will be paying the bill for these overjoyed free pony folks?

I didn’t see the part where she thanked the taxpayers for subsidizing her insurance. Must have missed it....

The young and healthy are so delightful, and since they never get sick, they say:

let 'em pay, let 'em pay, let 'em pay.

“Smith chose a silver-level plan from Humana, and said it was “totally mind-blowing” to see the $3.19 monthly premium, after a federal subsidy. “So we were just about good to go and the system went down again...”

I wonder if these two will send my mother a ‘Thank You’ card because WE now will be paying about $300 MORE every year for our coverage.... on a plan that “O’care” forced her off of. We're effectively paying TWICE... Once, because my mother paid into a plan for her entire working life and NOW once AGAIN, because she has been forced OFF her plan and onto a more expensive and inferior plan... just so the Smith's can have THEIRS for $3.

You guys are SO not welcome!!

You're welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Correction.... that’s:

“I wonder if these two will send my mother a ‘Thank You’ card because WE now will be paying about $300 MORE every MONTH for our coverage”

That’s right...$300 more each MONTH!!

Exactly. Or you will see a story buried a few weeks from now that it was not $3.19, but $319 per month and the website by some unknown means put the decimal in the wrong place.

A medical transcriptionist doesnt makes a hell of a lot more than the subsidy level. This is an out and out lie.

These are Medicaid folks. They don’t need insurance. They’re already getting everything for free.

. . . All she has to do now is confirm her payment and eligibility with Humana, her new insurance provider. “I am kind of afraid to call them because I feel like it’s a trick,” Smith confesses. “I am afraid I will call and they will say ‘JoAnn who?’”

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

This is why Obama and his crew have been so annoyed with that dang website, its failure put a damper on the flood of heartwarming stories of deserving folks getting lots of “free” and subsidized health-care goodies.

Expect to see these stories constantly on the Obama propaganda service (aka the mainstream media) from now on.

Just think of all those heartless Republicans who would rather give tax cuts to their billionaire buddies than health care to such deserving folks.

According to CoveredCa site for hubby and me (around the same age) our premiums unsubsidized would be $1200 per mnth. So they are receiving at least $12k a year from the taxpayer.

Many are finding you have to call to see if the application worked. Many who signed up are walking around with no insurance.

Also, so far it seems 90+% of those signing up for Obamacare are takers, not tax payers.

The whole thing should go BOOM!

Wait until she can’t find a doctor who will see her, or a hospital that will take her within 500 miles and she will have to pay for her drugs if they aren’t on the approved list.

Yes, the points you make are very valid. This woman is EXACTLY the type of person who will be determined to obtain insurance. And I certainly don’t blame her for that. But she and her husband will be a net negative on the system as designed.

If a plan for a family of four earning 94k needs a $5500 subsidy, there’s something wrong with the plan and when the subsidy drops to zero at the next thousand of earning, there’s something wrong with the subsidies.

The deductible is more like $6000 each ($1200 for both of them).
However the Obama media is leaving out one important item, while they have enrolled on the website, THEY DO NOT HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE! The payment system is not built yet, the subsidy amounts are not set yet, and the price of the insurance has not been determined.
It has been reported , but not widely, that the prices quoted on the ObamaRealyDoesCare website are low balled and the subsidy amounts are overstated. Remember it was just last month that we had the woman who's story Obama used on television about having affordable care after years without, that when she got the real price was unable to afford the insurance.

Smith’s employer doesn’t provide health insurance. “They took a vote at the company and people wanted more money in their pockets,” she says. And business has been thin. “I have had four paycuts in one year,” says Smith, who estimates she will earn $23,000 this year for her 40-hour a week job.

And how much unemployment does your husband get?

been looking forward to getting subsidized coverage for herself and her husband Eric, 56, who’s unemployed
