Most of my family prefers Sig’s, but the Glock has those wonderful double stack magazines. More ‘bang for the buck’ than anything on the market, IMHO. For instance, I don’t think Sig makes a .40 with 15 rd mag’s?
I personally use the model 22, and I don’t think .40 is too much for a girl.
My younger brother has a 10 mm Kimber, and it shoots pretty well (single stack though - not enough bullets).
I have been thinking about about the the 10 mm Glock which is cheaper with a lot more tries. Possible ammo issues - but interestingly, during the recent ammo shortages, 10 mm didn’t sell out around here like 9 mm and .40 cal.
I even have a 33 round magazine for it (as a novelty). Friends at my gun club always laugh when they see it (probably because ammo is so expensive that no one would want to fire at random a large amt of ammo.
My better half wants to compare the Glock19 vs. the M&P .9mm. Primarily, strength to pull slide spring on either.

A short shotgun would be my choice, but we aren’t allowed to have them. I heard that they were trying to make all small firearms illegal, and they started with short shotguns and short rifles, but weren’t able to make handguns illegal.
Short shotguns should be legalized.
They were legal, once upon a time. The NFA should be repealed in its entirety, and those items it addresses will be un-illegalized. Suppressors (mufflers) especially shouldn't be such a big deal to acquire and use.
It only takes one...well, three if you want to be thorough :-)

Your retina’s have two types of receptors, rods and cones.
Most of us are accustomed to how our vision works in daylight, when the cones make their contribution.
In the dark, most of your vision comes from the rods. So your night vision has lower spatial resolution, and is slower to follow movement. These characteristics become more pronounced with age.
The first muzzle flash will further exacerbate the situation.
If you are indoors (no starlight or moonlight) in the dark, unless you are going to be using NVD, I would suggest allowing a margin of error, i.e. more tries.
But God allows each of us to plan our own defense.
