BBC sent 3 TIMES as many staff to cover Mandela death than all rival British broadcasters combined

Nearly three times as many BBC staff have been sent to cover Nelson Mandela’s death than all of its rival British broadcasters put together, it has been revealed.

The corporation sent a total of 140 presenters and crew members to South Africa, while Sky News had the second highest number of the British broadcasters with 15.

The BBC said it expected to have deployed about 120 journalists, technicians and support staff to work on the story over a ten-day period. The BBC World Service is also reported to have sent a further 20 staff, whose expenses will not be paid for by license-fee payers. …

I stopped listening to the BBC (on SW) years ago. They did a week of AIDS awareness that included puff pieces from the prostitution capitals of the world. The guy that was reporting was doing it from a rickshaw in Bangkok or the like.

So, a GSE sending almost 10X the personnel of a competitive private concern is just par for the waste.

A friend, who used to be in the tv producing business told us to note how many extras BBC has on any show. A prime example are the Inspector Lewis shows with it seems like hundreds of extras contributing nothing to the show besides walking by the key people or the key people walking by them. Plus the usual sit down dinner for a mass of people in tuxes or suits being entertained by a symphony or choir, none of which add a thing to the show. Of course all of the unnecessary extras are union members.

I watch these Korean shows online with subtitles and there was this one time where we were counting the number of times we saw this particular extra walking by in the background, all wearing the same clothes, it was a lot.

They aren’t wasting money on extras

Often, the number of extras and their extra total costs and plots to “star” those, who are not stars, kills some of our shows. Nero Wolfe became like a BBC production with all the extras and highlighting of non stars. So a halfway decent show priced itself out of the market.

Some of the older Masterpiece Theater did that. Many of the ones now are like the Inspector Lewis montages, I noted.
