What time is appropriate to begin snow throwing (mechanically) on a Sunday morning?

Posted on 12/15/2013 3:13:28 AM PST by gasport

The street plows have been out. The foot of the driveway has an 18" ridge line. I must be at work at 0800.

My snowblower has been patiently waiting in the corner of the garage for me to take it in for repair - since LAST JANUARY.
I begin shoveling at 0700....

Earliest I've ever fired up my snow thrower was 5:30am. That was on a work day and there were 8 inches of snow on the driveway.

Other neighbors down the road were either out already clearing their driveways or out shortly after I was.

On weekends I've seen people out as early as 6:30 or 7am.

Do what you gotta do to get to work, if your neighbors know you work weekends they'll understand.

What are these things”street plow, snowblower”, you speak of?
Are these terms X-rated?
Seminole County, Florida . 73* 5 minute rain just finished.
Good for the flowers.

I would agree 7am seems reasonable.

Of course, I wake up at 4am every morning after having gone to bed at about 9pm, so I have no dog in that race.

Would shoveling on an asphalt driveway be any quieter?

People understand when you need to do things out of the ordinary.

It wasn’t all from generosity. When I finished I’d hurry in, take off my clothes, jump in bed and snuggle my cold body tight to my wife’s warm back.
The real reason was to stay friendly with my neighbors

“Let it melt on its own....”

Solar powered snow removal. I wanted to start a business that did that. Scam my way to wealth (just joking)

If you were my neighbour out blowing snow early Sunday morning, I would turn over in bed and think, “Poor guy has to go to work - so glad it’s not me out there.”

Or if I was feeling particularly kind, I would come out and help you.

Used to live on the highway in CO. Plows would push three lanes of snow into my driveway, which would then freeze solid. 10’ wide, mounded as high as four feet or more.

Snowblower not an option.

A friend told us his relocation plan when he retired: He was going to drive his pickup with the snowplow attached and head south until someone asked him,”What’s that thing on your truck for?”

Snowblower not an option.

What did you use to open a path to your driveway, dynamite?

Here’s something kinda funny: When I worked at Domino’s, closing every night, I would often see people mowing their lawn at 0100, 0130, it was the weirdest thing.

I do it any time I have to. I think people understand. I also snowplow my nearest neighbors when I can, so it doesn’t irritate them so much.

It isn’t a problem around here. People understand. Like another poster said, if I have to be at work at 0530, and there is a foot of snow, I turn on the snowblower. We all do.

Shoveling isn’t even an option for me. I can barely stand up straight right now due to a flare up of chronic back pain, but I have to get out there with the snowblower.

It is the price of living in areas that get snow.
