GAINESVILLE, GA. A north Georgia school board has approved a measure allowing some school resource officers to carry rifles.
The plan calls for a rifle to be kept in each of the city's high schools and middle schools, The Gainesville Times reported.
The weapons will be kept inside safes and will be accessible only to the school resource officer, school district officials have said. Earlier this year, district leaders said the safes would be accessible by fingerprint recognition.

LOL! I guess you could fire glitter or confetti for distraction. I was thinking #4 to slow and slugs to finish.

Now that is really stupid.
Ok The RO is on the side of the school away from the safe and in that area a criminal begins an assault on the kids. “Excuse me” Sir, Sir?? “can you hold off a minute or so I gotta run to the other side of the school”. “I’ll be right back just a minute or so Okay”?
Gun safes are for collectibles or $2,000 shotguns. Weapons meant to be used for protection must be carried at all times or they are useless.........
From the original source article...”The proposed gun, a Colt 6920 M4 carbine...” Geez, I thought the Left always identified these “M4 Carbines” as “assault rifles” —which, as everyone knows are only designed to kill large numbers people as fast as possible —which is why I guess the police need them! /s
One of the Austin ISD schools had an unannounced emergency “active shooter” drills last week or so. Kids and teachers freaked out. Glad there wasn’t a CCW teacher on campus.
The mere sight of them is why they must be locked away so the chirun won’t suffer from mental anguish by their presence.
GA FReeper ping.
I have no problem with this.
It’s a step in the right direction. I’m not going to nitpick the school board who are trying to make things safer as opposed to the thousands of school boards across the country who won’t even do this much.
Inside a building, you are pretty much always by definition at close range.
Exactly.
Once upon a time, the students carried rifles - if they were on the rifle team.
Times have certainly changed.
And some not on the rifle team when I went to H.S. Guys going hunting rabbit before or after school. Gun racks in the pickups WITH guns in them. Nobody touched them without permission. Don’t ever remember one being stolen.
Sigh... the good ol’ days; we were both there once upon a time.
LOL! They were good, now we’re old(er). Or more seasoned if you prefer.
I prefer ‘more seasoned’. I FEEL older!
Agreed.
Giving the good people of Gainesville the benefit of the doubt, I assume that the M4 Carbine is in addition to the handgun which the SRO has on his person at all times. This way, if there is a single shooter the SRO can use his handgun to diffuse the situation immediately. If the situation calls for more serious firepower, however, he has it at his disposal without needing to wait for backup.
In my opinion, that would actually be a pretty good emergency response plan, especially if willing teachers were trained in using the carbine so they can back up the SRO in the event of a serious emergency. Even better would be if this was in addition to the teachers being permitted to carry concealed weapons on campus. Ideal might be to have a couple of rifles/shotguns on campus in various locations (janitors’ closets, perhaps), which any trained faculty and staff may access.
Unfortunately it does not look like any of this is happening at this time. But it’s a good start.
I think that some of the decision comes from magical thinking. I have heard people say that someone (police officer) cannot defeat someone with an “assault weapon” because the AW is more powerful.
Some people imbue the rifle with some sort of mystical or magical power, that can only be defeated with an equal power (like Dungeons and Dragons, Magic The Gathering, and other roleplay or mystical games).
So they fear an AR, so they buy an AR to match its power.
Naturally within 25 yards or so, a person with a 9 can take down even someone holding the all-powerful Assault Weapon.
I can do it with a mosquito.
If I am a resource officer I would like a .223 in the corner for backup.
