The state of Connecticuts insurance department is requiring all health insurance companies providing plans in the state to cover gender change surgery and hormone therapy, as well as mental health counseling related to gender transition.
According to the Courant, the states insurance department used two statutes, a 2011 law prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity and expression, and laws requiring coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders, to justify coverage for gender changes.
The latest edition of the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists gender identity disorder or gender dysphoria as a mental disorder.
The Courant reports that Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) called Connecticuts decision a significant step forward.
In some cases, transgender individuals would try to get coverage for this treatment and be categorically denied which led to people paying out of pocket or forgoing their treatment altogether, said Zack Paakkonen, an attorney with GLAD.
Paakkonen added that failure of insurance companies to cover gender change treatments can lead to dire consequences, such as suicide attempts and substance abuse, among those wanting them. Insurance companies have 90 days to review their policies to ensure they are in compliance with the new state directive.
Connecticut joins California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. in requiring health insurers to cover gender change treatment and surgeries.

Ping me when the civil war starts.
They should receive mental health counseling only. ONLY.
Don’t even know if they should get that.
What they really need is a Christian message of deliverance.
But of course. We have to be liberal on these LGBT issues to make GLAAD and Lambda Legal happy.
Is this really surprising?
I'm surprised to not see my state on that list (WA).
It’s a Northeast state, right? Why don’t they just mandate castration of all males born. Do it biologically instead of thru the education mill. It’s quicker and easier that way.
There goes the entire premise for Dog Day Afternoon.
Zack Pack ‘em on in?
How long before there are no health insurers willing to provide coverage in Connecticut? In addition to the new gun laws and taxes, it seems Connecticut is paving its own way to its demise.
Well, I suppose that’s good for anyone in the government there.
That will certainly help lower costs and access. You can’t get your broken leg set but you can get you johnson removed lickity split.
