LONDON Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in the history of Formula One motor racing, with seven world drivers championships, is fighting for his life with brain injuries sustained on Sunday when he hit his head on a rock in a skiing accident in the French Alps, his doctors said on Monday.
They said it was too early to say whether the 44-year-old German would survive, or what the extent of his brain injuries might be. They said his family, including his wife, Corinna, and his teenage son and daughter, were at his bedside, and that the medical team were working continuously to save his life.
Unfortunately, he had some lesions to his brain when he came in, he had some diffuse injuries to his brain, but we cant really say what the outcome will be, Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, an anesthesiologist who is leading Schumachers medical team at the Grenoble University Hospital Center, told a news conference.
Hes in a critical situation and we can say hes fighting for his life, Dr. Payen said. We judge him to be in a very serious condition. He added, We are working continuously, hour by hour, but its too early to say whats going to happen, and to give a prognosis.

Is he in one of the Ruling Class Hospitals or one of the Peon Hospitals?
Met him once years ago when he was in L.A. for a project. Nice guy and affable. Tells me he loves coming to America to vacation all the time as he jokes, no one ever recognizes him (and enjoy his vacations with family in peace) here unlike in Europe. Prayers for Mikey..
Sad, all those years driving like a mad man,, and he gets taken out by a rock on a ski slope.
No one knows what may come their way in this precious thing we call life. Grab it and hug it for all it is worth for it is fleeting, even more so than fame these days.
Prayers for the family and their champion.
i believe Schumacher bought a ranch in Texas last year..
Wonder how many other non famous skiers this happens to.
Never heard of that but he did tell us he loves the open wide spaces of the American deserts.
Let's pray that he survives this critical accident.
“Sad, all those years driving like a mad man,, and he gets taken out by a rock on a ski slope.”
It says a lot about how safe F1 cars have become over the last couple decades. And Schumi has had a few pretty spectacular wrecks in his driving career.
I hope he pulls through this, but I know he probably won’t be the same afterwards.
Michael Schumacher has bought a 200-hectare ranch in Texas, according to the German newspaper Bild.
The report said the seven time world champion’s equestrian-loving wife Corinna has already started breeding riding horses at the property, where they have been staying in the past few days.
Oh, I forgot. He gave us autographed Ferrari caps too. It’s in the garage somewhere..
Prayers for a VERY good driver and a very good man.
Thanks for that!
He’s not a professional skier. He’s a Formula One racing driver. And I don’t know this because I pay attention to sports, I know it because I read the article posted.
Never got to share the experience with her, but I know she's done it by now, and she's happy.
What terrible news - one of the all-time motor-sports greats, he turned Ferrari into a perennial F1 winner, and still a young man. Hopefully he recovers.
Given the numbers of skiers world wide, I think it's pretty rare.....
Auto racing news.
We drove by the Ferrari dealership this morning.
