Imagine if all the secessionist movements in the history of the United States were successful.
Imagine if all the proposals put forward for states to withdraw from the union of the Unites States actually went ahead, how would America look today?
Those questions have been answered by a map that predicts the alternate universe of the USA based on all the threats or aspirations to secede from the United States.
The map, created by Mansfield University geogapher professor Andrew Shears, breaks the country up into 124 states.
While some are almost laughable - such as Red Wisconsin and Blue Wisconsin, and Little Egypt - others make perfect sense, such as splitting Florida into north and south to protect Miami from the rest of the state.
Currently there's an attempt to create the State of Jefferson in north California and south Oregon.
A ballot initiative will decide whether it goes ahead in 2014.

In the end we were reduced to 57 states.
Sounds like he got that completely backwards.
Laughable? Only in the eyes of pinkos.
It would be a liberals’ nightmare because way more than half of the extra 74 states would have 2 Republican senators.
Still not enough.
Is Chicagoland its own state by choice, or was it expelled from the rest of Illinois?
Especially, I love the state of Reagan carved out of California.
lol, looks like nobody wanted a piece of Iowa...
Draw a line following I35 in Iowa. That separates the state.
Let’s not forget the State of Forgottonia in the heartland ....
Title is oxymoronic. Secession implies no union.
According to this map, I’d be living in the state of Reagan.
I realize this is about areas that wanted to become other states, but does anyone remember a section of the Boston area which wanted to secede and become it’s own country? IIRC they wanted to be called ‘Mandela.’ Once they figured out that they took in more federal money than they paid in they backed off of the idea.
Two Vermont towns would join NH.
Hawaii and North Carolina would be unchanged. The State of Franklin would be taken from Tennessee. Maybe Connecticut also (can’t be sure from the map if it would lose any territory).
