An endangered Florida panther has been killed in a three-car crash in southwest Florida.

It's the first recorded panther death of the year.

Wildlife officials say collisions with vehicles pose a significant threat to the rare cats. Roughly 100 to 160 adult panthers remain in the wild.

Darrell Land of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the panther was fatally struck by a vehicle Thursday along Interstate 75 in Collier County was a young male that weighed up to 120 pounds

There used to be a sign on Alligator Alley that said how many panthers were left. I think the number was 48. Each time one was killed, they crossed out the number and put up a new number. I think it was down around 25 last time I saw the sign. I heard it eventually got down around 20.

Three-car crash mentioned in the headline, but nothing about it in the story. And several people injured.

And a jay-walking panther was killed. No concern about all the damage to the people involved in this panther-caused accident?

I don’t buy the number at all. I had one living across the street from me eating wild hogs. Ironically it was also killed by a car.

I also ran across one out in the woods while deer hunting. I think it was driftdiver hunting. scared the heck outta me as the brush was so thick it could be on you before you saw it.

You are probably right. Our cougars out here are real good at not being seen. I would assume those panthers are just as evasive.

An endangered Florida panther has been killed in a three-car crash in southwest Florida.

Methinks he's not endangered but dead. Course aren't we all endangered?

Endangered? Not really. It’s all just another Gummn’t scam.

All they have to do is ship a few hundred more in from Colorado. They’re all the same DNA stock.

I think anyone walking on the Interstate, with 4 legs or 2, is endangered.

“Florida panthers” are genetically indistinguishable from any other population of US mountain lions, but casting them as a separate species probably has UN Agenda 21 advantages.

"ship a few hundred more in from Colorado"

Its only been about 5 years ago they sent in 8 from Texas. Of course that raised the number but mainly it was to freshen up the gene pool, like hybrid vigor.

Its a small, isolated gene pool and a shrinking habitat

Shrinking as much as I can make it out here in West TX, I’ve killed 3 on the ranch in the last 26 years. Them Coyotes and feral hogs get shot on sight.

Thank God!

I was sure they'd been taken to a Black Site in Sudan for torture and execution.
