D-Day was 70 years ago...the end of the war. When will we ever stop talking about it?

We rarely ever hear of the recent Vietnam War. THAT was our generation, at least, whether we "won" or we "lost."

Not denigrating, just wondering.

Do you need a reason, good or otherwise, to punch Piers Morgan?

I served in the Fighter Squadron that flew diversionary bombing raids on Hanoi during that rescue attempt

It was very bold and exciting mission but the media managed to minimize it by focusing on the inaccurate intelligence proceeding the daring raid, and directing attention away from the awe inspiring military operation, something that the patriotic public would have loved to focus on.

Did they ever figure out who all those men they were killing were, Soviet or Chinese?

Probably not until we fight another war to win it. Since WW2 that has not happened. And that is not to denigrate those that fought or served anywhere any time. It is unfortunate that we lost so many good men and women in wars our leaders were not committed to winning decisively and violently.

I doubt if we will ever go to another WORLD WAR. Our battles seem to be totally regional--for some reasons usually trivial.

The world is too different now. With the Army-invented Internet there is instantaneous communication. Once there is communication, there is USUALLY some form of understanding. Once we understand each other, we tend to NOT fight with each other. Doncha think?

Also, our leaders are different: we reap the rewards of the 60's assholes flower children running the world.
We called Governor Gerry Brown "General Moonbeam." SUCH a loser.

Oh well, life in this world is a blink of an eye. Better to prepare for the afterworld...ETERNITY. Yikes.

Bombs don’t discriminate, but the building of anti-aircraft sites protecting Hanoi, and prohibiting their destruction until they were operational because Russians were assisting in their construction might give you an answer to part of your question

I meant, who were the men the Army was killing with small arms fire at the compound that Bull Simon’s team landed at, not the bombs, the men have always been described as Russian or Chinese.

The Navy was using flares instead of bombs when they harassed the Haiphong area.

I’ve been pondering this FRiend. I think the reason is that WW2 was the last war that pretty much everyone agrees was “righteous”. What I mean is that although there are always some pacifists and anti-war dropouts who are opposed to any conflict on principle, even the majority of liberals and progressives would admit that Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini were people that just had to be stopped. Many on the left however opposed the korean war, and especially the vietnam war (Hanoi Jane etc), and the fact that the outcomes of those conflicts were not so clean cut makes their opposition permeate through US society. In short, even after all thise years the Nazis still make the best villains because everybody hates them.
