Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers dies at 74.

Phil Everly, who with his brother, Don, made up the most revered vocal duo of the rock-music era, their exquisite harmonies profoundly influencing the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and countless younger-generation rock, folk and country singers, died Friday in Burbank of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his wife, Patti Everly, told The Times. He was 74.

Speed and alcohol had more to do with it than the Woodstock Generation. Disagreements through the late 60s and early 70s; climaxed in July 14,1973, midway through a concert in Knots Berry Farms in Los Angeles. In the middle of the second of three scheduled shows, the manager came on the stage and stopped the show. He told the audience that he was upset with Don's sloppy performance. Phil smashed his guitar, stormed off, and Don announced that The Everly Brothers had split. According to Don, the Everly Brothers "died ten years ago." Ten years of solo career doldrums followed.

I was in the audience when this happened.

COPD is pretty nasty. My 86 year old father-in-law was diagnosed earlier this year and now has to go everywhere attached to an oxygen supply. He was a former chain smoker and even though he quit smoking cigarettes 30 years ago, he still developed the symptoms.

Unbelievable. Yet another famous musician dead, dead, dead. At this rate, there will be nobody left to make music. When will the madness end? We've already lost Lou Reed, who took a walk on the wild side and never came back. That guy who played on Blue Oyster Cult but I can't remember his name (but he was good). And the list goes on...

Ray Manzarek of the Doors will never play that creepy organ music again. That one dude who drummed for those two rock bands - gone forever! Bob Welch with those Ebony Eyes and Donna Summer, both dead and gone.

Half the Beatles and 2/3 of the BeeGees dead dead dead. Andy Gibb too. Davy Jones of the Monkees is now in, well, Davy Jones' locker. So is Gerry Rafferty and Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols. Doug Fieder of the Knack, can you believe that? That's the dude who sang "My Sharona" in the summer of 1979 and dealt a death blow to disco.

And the list of the dead go on and on. John Stewart, Al Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Debbie Harry, Andrew Gold, Warren Zevon, Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone.

I can keep going but I think I made my point. We are very quickly running out of musicians and soon there will be no more music being made unless we find a way to make it stop.

I lost my husband to the results of two tours in Viet Nam and exposure to AO. He was 100% Priority One, Purple Heart Awardee disabled. He flew 407 fixed wing combat missions in his two tours.

The split was over the failure of “Roots”, and its followers. One of them I forget who, wanted to go country, like Jerry Lee Lewis at the time, and the other (probably Don, but I’m not sure) wanted to stay in rock.

After they got back together with the Paul McCartney song written for them, they stayed together but Salman Rushdie, who knew Don, reported at one time that they still didn’t get along and didn’t speak to each other off stage. I wonder if they ever reconciled.

Sorry for your loss. Salute to all of our heroes. My brother was still waiting for the VA to approve his claim. His diabetes was the main claim but he died from melanoma. He also had a son who was born deaf.

I’m sorry for your loss. I do worry, our family farm sprayed 2-4D for many, many moons and as a kid we never wore protection when mixing, nor did we care if we splashed the stuff on us or breathed the overspray. Back then, we were thankful to have the stuff.

No one in my family ever contracted any cancers associated with 2-4D exposure. I feel lucky.

Once more. The Woodstock Generation killed not only the Everly Brothers but Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino all of whom had great comeback albums around the same time and on WB Records, the finest record company around then (Chuck back on Chess), all of which sold nothing, while the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida crap was selling trillions. Roy Orbison was another one. Link Wray made a great album. Gene Vincent was still alive. Suddenly, after Sgt Paper and Woodstock history of rock and roll went into the memory hole, only to be revived in the 1980s by the Woodstock Generation musicians, who begged to be allowed on the comeback shows of the Everlys and Roy Orbison (have you seen the Black&White Night, where Bonnie Raitt played a lowly backup singer, and Tom Waits a backup piano player?) The idiot audience can only take it when their authorities feed it with a silver spoon. But the musicians themselves know their roots, man.

Amazing! You just never know when a live music performance is going to produce a transcendental moment where everything and everyone comes together to produce something greater than any one participant is capable of. Thanks for sharing, what great musicians!

Buy it (’Foreverly’ that is) ! I’m not a fan of either of these two people, don’t own any of their albums, not a fan of mainstream pop, but this is an outstanding work.

There are plenty of excellent musicians out there, performing their music and making albums.

You just don't like their music, in the same way that fans of Paul Whiteman and Artie Shaw hated Wilson Pickett and Johnny Cash.
