They’ve been together about four months. The tomcat is neutered. The girl cat will be spaded soon as she just had her first heat.
Before this.. Tomcat “ruled” his turf. Any cat who stepped onto this property he went after with a venence. I had found him shivering on my deck two years ago and took him in. Very sick and battered, be had been in the elements for quite a long time according to the vet, and pretty beat up. Yet he was micro-chipped and someone had all his teeth removed so we don’t know how old he is, but he’s definatly more than full grown.
The little gal came on the deck over the summer and he just let her wander around without bothering her at all. But she was thin and clearly not cared for so I took her in, especially since he seemed to be ok with her. But she wants to play and romp which he’s not at all interested in doing. And he’s protective of his food..if she gets too close to his food he’ll box her.
Yes, he’ll also hiss at her, and box her when she’ persists in trying to get his attention....but his taking her down at the neck where his teeth were locked into her jaw was more than disturbing. No skin was broken but it sure alarmed me.
Makes me wonder what they do when I’m at work!
Someone had all his teeth removed???? I’ve never heard of such a thing. Sounds horribly cruel, hard to imagine they were all bad teeth. How does he eat, you give him soft food?
I was even thinking (but hub put a stop to it) of getting are “new/returned” cat a pet - a kitten! He is a social cat but my other cats are so set in their ways, and one is totally blind and the other almost so (genetic, offspring of feral cats that people let breed indiscriminately). So.. I thought New Boy would like his own kitten to play with and I am sure it would have been a good idea but hub said “no more cats”, especially a kitten. We didn’t choose to have cats, ferals showed up, we fed them, two survived, they had 2 batches of kittens before we could catch and neuter them, and these three are the last offspring that didn’t die (predators) or that we didn’t give away.
Maybe your two will get along better after some time. It sounds like the old tom went through a lot of hardship and mistreatment and that would affect how he relates to other cats, I would think.
The vet said he'd been out there on his own a very long time...foot pads were calloused, flea and ear mite infested, and scar faced from fights....plus had a severe respiratory infection. But we fixed him up then and there with medicine and all he needed to get on with getting better. Took awhile ...but as my landlord stated...”That Cat knows he's won the lottery coming to your place! He is pretty spoiled and deserves to be.
He's funny when eating as he smacks his mouth, like an old geezer with no teeth, leaving as much food back in the dish and on the floor as he gets in his mouth!... But the Vet said not to worry..cats will wolf it down one way or another, he does just fine.....I give him both wet and dry food in between mealtime. He's about 14 lbs of cat now but not overweight..just a big tabby cat!
I'm willing to wait a little longer to see if these two will get along better. The young kitty darts around here like a ballistic missile HA! Though I understand she will calm down some once she's fixed, which might make a difference too. But if you do get a kitten the "oldters" will find it more than annoying....they'll likely bat at it like this one does. Kittens don't seem to get it that the oldsters don't want to play and romp around at break neck speed!
