An amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) departs the amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50). Carter Hall is a part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 26th MEU, deployed in support of maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. Aug 2013.

Gives me the willies to think about closing myself up in one of those things and driving it off the ramp of a ship into open water.
Obviously it displaces its own weight - but it sure doesn't look big enough for that!

USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), my last ship. We didn’t do AAVs too much, just enough to keep up quals—the LSDs are LCAC platforms. I certainly did my share of AAV launches from the LSTs and LPDs I was on though.
