How are birds in your area dealing with the cold weather? Any sightings or interesting stories worth sharing here?
There are reports of Arctic birds coming down into North America, including parts of the United States during this 'polar vortex'.. Any sightings?
Some birds flee the cold areas for warmer climates, and some stay and endure it by hiding in sheltered areas such as hollow or thick trees in groups.
If you have the means to set food out for birds, finding food is more of a problem for them during cold temperatures than enduring the temperature is.
As Al Gore would say, birds “know..”. They just know.. And who knew that dogs point along the Earth’s magnetic field when defecating? LOL Interesting stuff!
“Heated bird bath”.. You’re like the one person on the street who gave out entire candy bars on Halloween. LOL Awesome.
We have/feed lots of birds all year and I have discovered a new (to me) bird food.
It is safflower seed and the squirrels don't like it/won't eat it. I like squirrels but they were eating most of the black oil seeds I put in my feeders.
The squirrels still come into my yard, they just don't go to the bird feeders anymore. YEA!

This week I'm really only seeing grackles and crows or ravens - they are black, flying in groups, stopping in my trees, then moving on.
Nyjer/Niger seed is a HUGE hit with the gold finches. I think that’s the seed for putting inside of the hanging food socks. Gold finches go crazy for that but I guess the sock would freeze in some parts!!!
I have had this heater for over ten years. Simple element with plastic thermostat keeps water just above freezing. The birds congregate here for it and the squirrel proof feeder.
I only hand out miniature candy bars for Halloween but I let them take several. LOL
Seeing a Cardinal (not the baseball player) in person is on my bucket list. Beautiful bird.

I gave the weather my own “bird” report. -10F in northeast Ohio this morning (-38 WC).
I love seeing the cardinals against the snow, especially the males sitting in the branches watching over the females feeding on the scattered feed.
I’m in NC, it was near zero last night. I have a couple of chickens that slept about halfway up a leaf-less oak tree last night. I was worried about them but they were fine. I gave them plenty of corn because it’s suppose to raise their body temps. I really need to finish building their coup!
don’t know about birds but my smart dog faces magnetic north when pooping, and my stupid dog faces the opposite direction

Birds here are confused as many are migratory-like Sandhill Cranes etc...They came all the way to Florida only to be frozen to death!
Seriously, maybe that was an exaggeration , but it is bone chilling cold in North Central Florida. Has only made it 41 degrees so far. Good news is that Saturday it will be 80!
Same as always. Slate-colored Juncos, Cardinals, scarlet finches, American sparrows, Nut hatches, black-capped chickadees, and occasional Blue jay. That’s it. Not to mention the constant turkey and black vultures swirling around looking for a dead deer. Nothing else. The usual.
