A wonderful set of photographs taken in China and Japan which gave the Western world one of its first glimpses of the Far East is going for auction. And one particular image of Chinese corpses at North Fort in Peiho in 1860 has presented a stark reminder of the Second Opium War. The North Fort was one of several Taku Forts - strategically-placed defences in China that guarded the mouth of the Peiho River. The fort, which was located near modern-day Tianjin, was breached on August 20, 1860 and its garrison surrendered after a fierce fight.

Glad communism took over and made the Chinese lives so much better....
There are people now and in the past as thinking they deserve everything at your expense.
And we placed an embargo on Japan because of their war on China, and occupation of French territories in Asia.
China has always survived and conquered by absorbing it’s enemies... they used to do it with their vast lands, now they can do it by their economic power.
Apart from the carcasses, it’s hard to distinguish between the before and after pictures. Both China and Japan appear to have been ramshackle dumps back then.
Actually the Chinese did have the tech and manpower during Ming dynasty, remember the treasure ship and admiral Zheng He’s voyages? But they chose not to conquer the countries they visited. A credit must be give where it is due.
