BBC: Extreme Pilgrim - Shaolin Monastery

I started watching this out of a martial arts interest, and found this a unique documentary I think anybody would find interesting.

It's supposed to be how this English pastor, an enormous lib, is dissatisfied with his religious fervor and supposedly is encountering extremes in religious experience to deepen his own.

The first place he decides to invade with his camera crew is the Shaolin Temple. Where he wants to learn both kung fu and spirituality and demands to be treated like any other supplicant to the temple.

The shaolin teachers take him at his word. Any bets on how long it takes for this vegan super lefty to ring the bell? Not very long.

Soon after the whining is done, the snorting begins. The Shaolin Temple is too commercial, he decides. He's heard of a smaller temple up in the hills that's much more spiritual, he decides he would prefer that place.

He goes to the second temple and too late finds the work here is double the place he just left. Before they practice kung fu all day they haul supplies on foot up the side of a mountain.

Confronted by the fact that he has burned his bridges and there are no more alternative temples to descend on with his cameras, he accepts his lot, settles in to follow the buddhist regimen, train and work, and lo and behold, the liberal seems to grow a pair. A small pair, but a pair nonetheless.

Interesting transformation story and visually interesting, some nice filmmaking.

Anyone who gets a secret pleasure out of seeing a lefty get painfully checked by reality (and in this case, maybe learn something) will have plenty of opportunities to smile watching this :)

Do you think it’s just more propaganda about how Eastern values and culture are better than Judeo-Christian values and culture?

Awesome I love that little ditty. I really miss the old Dr. Demento show and unusual songs.

I believe the Shaolin monastary was destroyed back in the 1600s. All those trained monks could not defeat the Chinese Army.

Not on Netflix.

Is there any reason (language, nudity, graphic violence beyond Kung Fu) that my little boys couldn’t watch this? They like travel shows.

Thanks. Maybe we can look at it tomorrow, if they ever finish cleaning up their room.
