Dog found adrift in Tampa Bay had loving owner who died

Before the little brown dog became Gracie, before she was rescued while treading water in Tampa Bay and before she ran away, Gracie was Baby, and she was loved.

Knotts, 40, died suddenly in October and Baby was passed to a third roommate, who ultimately decided to give her to a new caretaker she found through Craigslist.

The dog was with that owner for a few days before running away in early December, Clements said.

I guess only Gracie knows how she ended up in Tampa Bay. It was a bit of a bumpy ride for her, but now she’s home again.

I’m not buying the story that she “just ran away” and somehow, by magic, ended up in the middle of the bay. She didn’t swim two miles out by herself. That third roommate dumped her out there. Sub-human, sub-mammalian slime.

One of my cats is named Lucky.

We found him, starving and dehydrated, in a Kroger Market’s parking lot during a stretch of hot weather in the month of September 5 years ago.

When I stopped the truck and got out, calling to him, he came right to me. We’ve had him ever since. He is small, black and white, and will run off any other cats that come onto our property.

We think he ended up in that parking lot by wandering from a near-by residential neighborhood. He’s mine now, and sleeps on my feet at night.

Have I ever rescued dogs? Yep. I’m an equal opportunity animal rescuer, and this isn’t the first one I’ve mentioned on FR.

When I was on my bicycle riding home from school (many many years ago). I heard a sound in the ditch so I stopped to check it out.

It was a healthy young tom cat that someone had tied up tightly in a 5 pound cloth flour bag and thrown into the ditch. It wasn’t a road that many people would be walking or biking down, mostly just cars. It might have been a long time till someone else found him.

He slept on my pillow for the rest of his life. I have made a number of rescues over the years.

More likely it was the person that third roommate found on Craigslist. Everyone needs to know — if they don’t already — that Craigslist is a favorite source for animals for those who want to abuse them. While it’s possible to find a good home that way, the odds are against it. Many people pose as “good families”, etc... so they can get their hands on an animal who is “free to a good home” — and the hell for that animal begins then. There are far better and safer ways to rehome animals.

You’re probably right. But it’s still ultimately the responsibility of the roommate, since everyone knows, or should know, not to use Craigslist to rehome animals for just this reason.

A couple of years ago, a dog swam up to kayaker Rory O'Connor in Siesta Key (Sarasota). O'Connor had a camera running on his boat, which videoed the whole incident.

It turned out the dog's owner had been killed by a drunk driver. The dog had fled the scene several miles away. The deceased owner was also into kayaking and had a yellow boat similar to O'Connor's.
