dictionaries ad nauseam | 9 January 2014 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 01/09/2014 4:44:07 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

co·mi·ty\ˈkä-mə-tē, ˈkō-\, noun
1. a: friendly social atmosphere : social harmony
b : a loose widespread community based on common social institutions
c : comity of nations
d : the informal and voluntary recognition by courts of one jurisdiction of the laws and judicial decisions of another
2. : avoidance of proselytizing members of another religious denomination

Example sentence:
When asked by a fundraiser attendee about civility in the Senate, Coburn reportedly said: “There’s no comity with Harry Reid. I think he’s an absolute asshole.”
—Erin Durkin, NY Daily News, October 28, 2013

Etymology:
Latin comitat-, comitas, from comis courteous, probably from Old Latin cosmis, from com- + -smis (akin to Sanskrit smayate he smiles). First Known Use: 1543

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

that makes sense. if you recognize another state’s law, you afford it comity, and do not enforce your own laws even if they are different. if, as a religion, you recognize another religion’s precepts, you afford it comity and do not to enforce your own beliefs on one of their members.

I guess if you read it that way. I read it as the action of avoiding prosletyzers from other religions.

Like when you pretend you’re not home when the Mormons are on your porch.

Your way makes more sense. LOL

I think it goes along the same lines as social harmony, not rocking the boat.

Well that’s what it means legally, so it’s what makes sense just applied in a religious context. We used to get Jehovah’s witnesses in pa but Mormons down here.

A for you, earned without even trying! I am in the process of trying to mail a portrait up north, 20x22 and trying to find a box is a nightmare.

as a religion, you recognize another religion’s precepts, you afford it comity and do not to enforce your own beliefs on one of their members.

a better example than pretending you aren't home when the mormons knock at the door: I don't insist that xs be dunked under water, and she does not insist that I should go to a priest to confess my sins. we are each exhibiting comity for our denominational differences.

This is about the DNC knowing no Democrat can win without NJ.
That is why people need to get used to the idea of Christie as President, like him or not.
No one is going to out debate him (Perry), when he stumps, people go nuts. And the Electoral college is the cherry on top.

If Christie gets the nomination (presumably as a republican?) even then NJ still goes dem in the general election. And Christie so alienates the GOP base that probably a third of the red states in the last few elections turn blue. A Christie nomination by the GOP will result in a new third party -- the Constitution Party if you will -- and you can say hello to a Dem sweep of the white house plus majorities in both houses of congress for years to come.

avoidance of proselytizing members of another religious denomination

The terseness of the dictionary threw me off.

Avoidance of
Avoidance of what?
Avoidance of proseltyzing members - i.e. members who were engaged in proseltyzing activities.

As opposed to:

Avoidance of what?
Avoidance of proseltyzing
Avoidance of proseltyzing who?
Members of another religion

"Refraining from the proseltyzing of members of another religion" would not have had the ambiguity.

Oh it was in-artfully worded for sure. I literally had to think it through just as I wrote it, to understand how it could be used in that context.

Hobbes theory hinges on Christie taking NJ, but I’m with you, I don’t think that’s any sure thing, and I see it playing out as you describe. True conservatives would stay home in droves everywhere, we saw them do so in re Romney and he was far less objectionable.

I don’t know about other issues, but Scott Walker is everything Christie is on fiscal sanity/”taking on the unions” without being obnoxious.

You are not thinking it through.

Politics hinges on two things.

Money, and Machines.
Christie has a machine in NJ, and is now head of the RGA. 43 mil for goodwill.

No Dem can win without NJ, if he can lock it down,,your now blue state os immaterial, and since Hillary!ous will have the inside track in 2016...

No real conservative will stay home.

Perfect storm.

Your premise is flawed on several counts.

Christie, is head of the RGA, so...alienating red states...ummm..no

As long as he controls NJ, via political machinery, he will probably win it, but....even if he does not...it’s the most expensive media market in the nation, which means states like Wisconsin, (10,000 votes or so, last 4 cycles) lose the money it takes to flip them

Hillary! Yes, red states will stay home at that prospect.

Christie, will stomp to the nomination after voters return a majority to the Senate and the House in 2014, (another reason the Red State stay home logic fails)and he is tacking left now, so he can go red meat later.for anyone thats not seen him challenged, youtube it yourself.

And after 8 years of Barry O, a Republican from NJ is not reason enough to persuade conservatives from wanting payback, especially...when he starts stumping.

Total Control of the Government.

And it won’t be close.

The 60’s Generation running things today still long for the “comity of Eros,” but have beset the nation with a tragedy of their errors...

Finally got it done at the UPS store(it was 21x24, a hard size to find anywhere and I tried) where they charged me about $20 more than I thought it should be but it is sent. I got very emotional about sending this when I got back in the car and am still trying to compose myself.
