Toy Story and Full Metal Jacket star R. Lee Ermey sparks outrage after posing with bodies of hunted lions

Toy Story and Full Metal Jacket star R. Lee Ermey has sparked outrage after photos of him hunting and killing lions in Africa surfaced on Facebook.

The 69-year-old former US Marine, who voices the soldier Sarge in the animated film and the drill sergeant in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 movie, can be seen sat behind the carcasses of a lion and lioness with a rifle in his hand.

It is unclear when the photographs were taken but in a 2012 interview he spoke of ‘going for the Big Five’ on a trip to South Africa.

Toy Story and Full Metal Jacket star R. Lee Ermey sparks outrage after posing with bodies of hunted lions R. Lee Ermey starred as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket (Picture: Supplied) Animal rights group Peta has called the actor’s actions arrogant and ‘devoid of honour’.

A spokesman is quoted by the Mirror as saying: ‘It takes no courage to stalk and kill animals. Lions are treated as living targets for the arrogant and ignorant with more money than morals.

‘Most people are appalled at someone like this man gunning down animals for a thrill, a trophy or a souvenir photograph. ‘

Ermey has so far not commented.

Not a whole heck of a lot of eating meat on a lion. But to each his own.

But it’s still awesome. And why don’t we know the spokesman’s name? Talk about courage.

If hunting were just about eating, it’d be a stupid waste of time and money. Since it’s mostly about fun, it’s a great hobby. What could make for better hunting than killing the King of Beasts?

Obama should give him an award for stimulating the economy of Africa.

Especially since Michelle and Oprah are too busy spending our money in Hawaii.

Well what if he posed with a wolf in Idaho? I’ll prolly catch Holy Heckoly for this but I don’t think lions are an endangered species. Big game hunting in Africa has been going on for a trillion years. People are raising them in their backyards here in the US. There is supposedly a 300 pounder running wild in the woods around Dahlonega. If we see it while walking around out there guess what we will do. :-)

Um, you're wrong, sissypants. I have no problem with it at all and most people I know couldn't care less. Why don't you print a real stroy about humans being killed by jihadis or Communists?

Now that I have had a couple of minutes to think about it I don’t know how effective a .40 cal would be on a Lion. I guess if you emptied the whole clip into it. Anybdy care to speculate?

Marine Corps does not have drill sergeants, that's the Army.
The Marines have drill instructors, aka, DIs.

Too damn bad this is legal hunting which has been arranged as part of the preservation effort. Hunting is good and some people should take their “outrage” and shove it. What possible say do they have over an American citizen abiding by the laws of some African nation? None of their damn business.

If it were not for the trophy fees and associated costs of lion or any other African big game hunting, there would be little reason for Africans to keep vast amounts of lands in the wild, rather than in farm land and other destructive conditions.

Just as in the US, conservation ( not animal right activity) indeed has kept the wild spaces wild and the wild species present.

As a matter of fact, the only lions or lionesses allowed to be hunted are those who are carefully scrutinized and deemed to be past breeding age, and therefore a burden on the rest of the game they eat ( think limited resources and limited predators). Pro hunters (guides) are very careful to be right before allowing an animal to be taken, as the industry, the governments and the CITES organizations are not very forgiving towards both the hunter and his guide should an ineligible animal be taken (unless it is actually attacking the hunters etc). Conservation (hunting) is the only answer man has for otherwise encroachment.

Elephants, contrary to common thought, are over populated in many areas in Africa, and culls and nuisance hunts are a regular effort to keep both carrying capacity and elephants in balance. The fees paid go to the local areas, the meat to the local population and the trophy to the hunter etc. It is a very successful capitalistic process that benefits everyone, hunters, guides, locals and the animals. Some will never understand that because they have lost their minds.

I have an entire church full of Maasai who will tell him that he is sadly mistaken.

The ones who are not church members would offer to take him on their next hunt. His name would be "Bait".

I suspect a good many more are plain old-fashioned jealous, if only because hunting lions is expensive and takes courage and skill.

The people complaining about this should have to help the lions use prophylactics to help prevent overpopulation of the herd.

Your typical African village won't turn it down, though. It would be better bush meat than they often get.

True. Buy the rifle, the tags, the stand, corn to attract, etc. then shoot the deer and cut the meat with pork or beef by a processor who charges so much a pound. I don't mind deer meat chili or deer sausage but if I didn't shoot the animal I will stick with store bought meat.

That being said there are still those who love the meat and save money. There is the added fact that skills are being maintained for what could come in a SHTF situation, both for food and survival.

Plus, elephants are smart enough to realize what is going on, and sometimes they get their revenge. Plenty of African villages have felt their wrath after one too many culls.

“I hope it costs him his career, boycott his films and anything else he is involved in. Make him a pariah. He is a sorry disgusting excuse for a human being. Lions in the wild are in the decline, those who believe they are not heading for dangerously low numbers are naive.”

“I hope he gets eaten by a lion! Coward”

“Trophy hunting is a horrible practice;only an insane person can justify it”

Just a bunch of butt-hurt losers whose boyfriends didn’t have enough G**damn courtesy to give them a reach-around.

Well, same subject, but different in a lot of ways. I did PI in '66 and when people ask if PI was that bad, I tell 'em, - nope, it was a lot worse.
I wasn't pleased with the 'Nam part of FMJ either. Then again, it was a Hollyweird production.
BTW, if you look closely ... Ermey has his PUC on upside down.
