How was bridge closing supposed to hurt mayor?

Posted on 01/14/2014 8:03:09 AM PST by 429CJ

I don't understand something about the Chris Cristy/bridge thing. The lanes were closed supposedly to get revenge on the mayor of the small town for not endorsing Cristy. But HOW was that supposed to hurt him? Was it believed that the citizens of that town would blame the mayor for the traffic mess? One would assume that they knew that highway problems would not be his fault. It seems like vandalizing your next door neighbor's car to get revenge on the man across the street. What am I missing here?

It wasn’t a terribly well thought-out plan. If anything, I think it was probably something like a show of force - “mess with us, and we can shut your town down.”

The intent, I think, is to hurt the people who elected the mayor and/or enrage the voters against the mayor....yes it is petty

The only thing I can think up was that it was an attempt to hurt business in the town. I know when I run into traffic delays I certainly wouldn’t blame the mayor of the town nearest to the highway, that would just be stupid.

I asked that same question on another forum the day after it broke. Never got an answer.

If I’m in a freeway traffic jam in the Twin Cities I don’t think “That dang Mayor of Coon Rapids. I’d sure like to give him a piece of my mind!”

My question is how will Krispy’s points be divvied up? He was ahead in a FNC poll with 16%, I think, with Cruz, Paul, Ryan and others at 12%.

Cui Bono with this scandal?

This may be reaching, but around here, when there are inconvenient and/or poorly planned traffic delays for road construction or whatever, people seem to blame the mayor. The annoyances may be remembered at the ballot box.

I would think that if disgruntled citizens called City Hall they would have been given the number of the Bridge Authority, the people who shut down the lanes.

And if I’d been answering phones at City Hall I’d have told the caller to call me back and tell me what they say ‘cause I’m mad as heck about it too.

It seems like the venal gravy-sucking pigs who did this might not have been so well-thought-out.

****

Polls at this point are name recognition. Meaningless.

If it was a city street, yes of course. This is an interstate bridge. I think most people know a mayor has no control over that.

Sokolich wrote to Baroni on Sept. 12 that not only did the Authority’s decision “wreak havoc’’ on Fort Lee, but “adding insult to injury, many members of the public have indicated to me that the Port Authority Police Officers are advising commuters in response to their complaints that this traffic debacle is the result of a decision that I, as the Mayor, recently made.”

No, they’re not, but who of Cruz’ competitors stands to gain the most from a Krispy implosion?

I’m leaning Ryan thinks he does.

Someone here posted that they saw Rachel Maddow of all people connect an interesting set of dots. At the time Christie was in the middle of a big fight with democrats over a Supreme Court nominee and the day before the "traffic problems" e-mail went out he exploded about how the dems opposing his nominee were animals. The leader of that dem oppposition in the State Senate was from the district where Fort Lee is. Coincidence? Maybe but I think using the bridge as leverage to punish a political opponent makes more sense than trying to punish a dem mayor for not endorsing a RINO governor.

Here's a link:
Maybe even Rachel Maddow can get one right sometimes

Just one of the many questions. I have wondered the same thing.

Be honest with the assignment. I haven’t watched the video, but my guess is that David does ‘get it’ and disagrees. Write the paper about why you relate to him and then argue well against the BS.
