In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sophist (SOF-ist), noun
One who makes clever, but unsound arguments.
Example sentence:
"But this day Mansoor had turned five, and Ma used a sophist's argument to call for a celebration."
---M.G. Vassanji; The Assassin's Song; Doubleday; 2007.
Etymology:
From Latin sophista, from Greek sophistes (sage), from sophos (clever). Earliest documented use: 1542. In ancient Greece, Sophists were philosophers and teachers known for their subtle, but fallacious reasoning.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Everybody puts a marble in a fishbowl when they come in and takes the marble out when they leave.
and all goes well till you lose your marbles...
if your state legislature is 2/3 Rep how the hell did terry get elected? cheat much did he?
they demonized Cooch as anti-woman, and the NRSC did not give Cooch the $ he needed to counter McAuliffe’s mendacious media blitz.
And here I thought absolutely anyone with a pulse could get accepted to some college.
well as the comments make clear, obv the intent is to make it more available for FREE to those who cannot afford to get a scholarship or to pay tuition. Anyone who needs to go to college can go, IMO. this is BS as is most everything else he spews.
Why the heck does he keep appearing with his sleeves rolled up, as if he has ever done a real job that required it? All style, no substance, ladies and gentlemen, this is the democrat party.
Nancy Pe-lousey displays a remarkable talent for sophistry when she argues that extending unemployment benefits boosts the economy!
POSER POSEUR
My daughter (along with 25 other members of the Richmond Symphony Chorus) sang the Start Spangled Banner for the opening of the house of Delegates last week.
They complain that we don’t have smart kids, but the smart ones cannot afford to go to college, while the poorer undereducated get in free. Makes no sense.
That must have been very nice.
oh i think the smart ones have no trouble at all in this day and age, there is tons of scholarship $ available. Obama wants to get into college the ones that have no business being there.
There are lots of smart kids with poor parents, just not dirt poor in ghettos. Poor from medical bills, business failures, etc. The upper middle class that has some kind of financial upheaval, that is so common today. They incur untold debt to go to school with no job prospects when they get out. Yet we all pay for these underachieving kids to go these days.
