Wow. Reading that bio link, the Noo Yawk Times was thoroughly infiltrated - or were willing and eager collaborators, much like today.

Douglas Edwards and Walter Cronkite were both in the running to do the TV Evening news.

CBS wanted Edwards but his drinking was a concern. Cronkite was too young looking according to the brass.

In the end they went with Walter Cronkite.
