Not many people understood why Monica Smith began working on her 8×10 shed in the back yard and then they laughed when they realized she was turning it into a tiny cabin. It seemed strange that she was putting so much effort into just a shed. But it wasnt just a hobby. Her youngest daughter and 5 children lost their home. So, Monica decided to give them her own and move out to the back yard.
This may be the coolest grandmother ever.

The show is on one of the liberal channels, IIRC, and they'd never show that kind of government intrusion. I'm sure it happens behind the scenes. I think this is on Animal Planet, one of the worst PC offenders.
Nice little place she built. Now, should/when the local gubmint tell(s) her she can’t reside there, all she needs to do is pick up the house and move it to a place more to her liking.
Good for her. Other than a 500 pounder, most people could live in that small of space.
Those aren't necessary anymore. He'd just get in the way of the Welfare check for FIVE children.
He built a shed in the back yard and drove his own chisel-point well for his water supply. The Water company tried to condemn the house because of no water service, so he installed a valve to share municipal water for a few hundred gallons a month to keep them out of his business. He also had a garden shed he used as an outhouse. He had a thing about doing your business inside of where you reside.
He trashed picked and rebuilt / reupholstered every stick of furniture inside their home. He canned every vegetable and fruit he could find a jar for. He caught and cold pickled sucker fish, about 300 pounds a year. He never had more than one 40 watt lightbulb on at a time.
Alotta folks mentioning the lack of a building permit but most places don’t require one for an out building less than 100 square feet.
Now the property appraiser and code enforcement knows about it.
Good point. I see increased taxes and harassment in her future.

This is awesome!
But I worry about the government ‘officials’ who will no doubt come snooping for ANYTHING not ‘up to code’ and start milking the woman’s finances with “fines” until she is forced to make them stop living in the shed.
I hate that I think this way but I’m SO bummed that we can no longer do things like this on our OWN property anymore.
Love these little houses. I assume the porcelain room in the house is shared.
I didnt see the porcelain convenience.....It’s out back, in the garden. A two-fer.
Normally she’d be able to claim it’s not a domicile and doean’t need a certificate of occupancy.
Well, except for this article LOL!
Um... A bathroom??
Lots of Freepethugs all for that.
I have debated them on their complete ethical lapse regarding the morality of building codes beyond basic fire safety since I first registered here.
Morality of anything has nothing to do with it.
Freepers do not control what government does, so everyone could agree with you and it would still be irrelevant.
Getting into a discussion of the morality of something is a side track. Most don't like to go down a side track.
The bathroom is off the kitchen and behind the stairs.
That’s where I figured it was too, hence the curtain along the back of the stairs.
Yup...did she get a building permit for that?
did she have the requisite inspections?
If that answer is “no” to both questions they will make her take it down.
How long will Grandma be able to climb those stairs to her bedroom?
Morality is not a sidetrack.
It is in fact central to life and human behavior.
