Jessica Michan (@jessicamichan) January 15, 2014

For the love of everything ever, it’s January.

Easter is in April this year and we haven’t even hit Valentine’s Day. But the retail calendar works a little differently these days. Behold the Easter candy displays:

I think it's a little early for the Easter candy display don't ya think ? #easter http://t.co/zdsDF3Rm6L
Frank Marzullo (@TrustFrank19) January 09, 2014

Yes, we do.

Good grief, that's ridiculous. It's practically in May this year RT @bccohan: CVS already has Easter candy out?!? http://t.co/JOyeM1hbDP
LP (@LesliHannah) January 17, 2014

Seriously?? #eastercreep http://t.co/VwLSQ7JQ
Justin Norris (@3lderdragon) January 03, 2013

Are you kidding me! Easter candy already available! Give me a break! Ridiculous! 2 soon! http://t.co/YHr7MUHgUB
Maricela A Scott (@FabulousAunt) January 16, 2014

THEY ALREADY HAVE EASTER CANDY IN TARGET. IT IS JANUARY. http://t.co/VZnxU6pbRJ
Elizabeth Merritt (@EGMerritt) January 15, 2014

NO, NO, NO! Its still a month until Valentine's Day. I do not accept Easter candy being sold! http://t.co/7AffkQ7GtR
Danielle (@NY_dee) January 15, 2014

Surely this should not be allowed! Easter candy sales already? http://t.co/8MNKWxTHic
Kay or Ari (@kayakaari) January 10, 2014

Some stores didn’t even wait until January.

Now I think CVS is just trolling me. They put out the Easter candy two days after Christmas! http://t.co/stWsRfYVSZ
Ted Nesi (@tednesi) December 28, 2013

My sister took this picture – Valentine's Day & Easter candy already in our local store! D: http://t.co/AiNPJy9sYR

Oh good, they got the Easter candy out. I was worried they might put that out too early this year. 😬 http://t.co/u9vKPdMGyn

December? Come on.

Easter candy out on Dec. 27?
That's 116 days before the holiday.
That is literally the same as putting Halloween candy out for sale on July 9th.
...
Which I totally expect to happen.

Perhaps they are just afraid of the arrival of final justice.

All stores have seasonal sections. It really just amounts to keeping the shelves full.

I’m not sure if it’s Holiday ‘Creep’ or a more visible sign that ‘Retail’ is in really tough straits and is looking for every dollar they can get to save themselves... and their stores.

Yes, they need to have new stuff to sell. I’m more confused by the arrival of summer clothes, when we’re freezing.

All retail is much worse than is being reported.

A friend in upstate NY told me that the annual craft show which is held for a month in a major mall was 86% down from previous years and that was just before Christmas.

If your inbox is like mine, the *sales* and *specials* have become a joke. For the past month, every retailer is “extending sales” and they also send *updates* 3 or more times a day. Retailers I have ordered from 2x in 8 years tell me I am a *favored* customer and they have a *Special* “just for you”.

I wonder if the candy wholesalers offered discounts for volume and the retailers took it and now are trying o increase sales by offering it earlier.

I sell wholesale. Every distributor wanted to order below minimums around Christmas. We stuck to our policies and all said they would wait to order mid-January. We’ll see what next week brings.

Everyone is tapped out or stretched. Even if they are still in the stock market and made money this year, they are paying commissions and taxes. Wealthy folks we know who were going to stay working for several more years, usually for spousal health insurance benefits, are now retiring in 2014. Best guess is they will save a lot on taxes and they just found out the health insurance benefits are less than they were hoping.

In my area, this is always a slow month, because property taxes are due 1/31. This year, add in that heating costs for December were about 20% higher than last year. As a wholesaler, I know no one wants inventory before the end of January because they will be taxed on it.

The administration and the progs are killing this country.

I understand it better in craft stores. Crafters need time to create/make stuff. I don’t know why anyone would want to buy Easter candy months ahead of time - wouldn’t it go stale? Or perhaps they just want to munch on Easter candy for a couple of months!

it’s to be expected. Christmas stuff starts to show-up after labor day, valentine’s day starts 12/26 and Easter is next.
I’m assuming that it’s worthwhile and there is science behind it or stores would not be doing it.

Christmas sales were in the shitter this year so they need to start earlier and keep the shelves filled. The local Walmart and Target and even Home Depot all have multiple retail racks filled with empty plastic storage bins.

The retailers know that dirty little secret; most Americans are Snacking Addicts, so any cute and fuzzy excuse to eat a feedbag o snacks will do for many consumers. Why let kids have all the fun? Nowadays, you can order online, so nobody sees you at Kroger’s on January 18th, pulling two shopping carts overflowing with Valentine Chocolates, Shamrock Cookies, those Foil Wrapped, Reese Peanut-Butter Easter Eggs, or the Chocolate Bunny Soldiers. Each candy order ends with customer comment; ‘I was requested to place this early order right now, for a friend.”
