“Hi-five, myself!”

But, I heard a few fingers got consumed.

Nice photo, but now, after the lightning, the caption needs to be changed to high FOUR! It seems that the last lightning strike blasted off one of the fingers.

ya....That’s on the same page as the instructions for carving The Ark of the Covenant.

Let us know when you reconcile that little fact with your interpretation of your quote.

Some have made comments that fingers might be missing after lightning struck the statue. It seems the image I found online with the comments and posting it here was actually from a story, also appearing in the New York Post.

I found the image on Imgur, the image site used by Reddit. I use Imgur to post images here at FR. See post 11.

I rarely attend church, but when I am subjected to Catholic weddings with all their up down sit stand up down sit stand go get crackers up down sit stand... I look at the icon they have hanging above the altar that is a represention of a man, the son of G-d Himself, gruesomely scourged, a crown of thorns jammed upon His head, nailed to a cross, and lanced in the side... and I find it rather... disturbing. That such a likeness is acceptable, is very odd, given the 2nd commandment being fairly clear about idols.

Curious - are you comparing the Ark of the Covenant, or the tablets inside (given by God Himself) to an idol?

I can see both sides of an argument about whether statuary is the same as an idol (some will feel some worshipful awe and others will understand it's just inanimate art), but I'm curious about your apparent defense of such statuary by making a mockery of the truth of the Bible.

Like the cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant?

Sculptures are not evil. Worshipping them is.

God’s instructions for constructing the Ark include orders for carving two kneeling cherubim. Are they idols?

Let's take a deep breath and actually think on this. There is no doubt that we are admonished not to make/adore idols. In one place it tells us that it is really stupid to carve an idol out od piece of wood, when we also use the same wood to make a chair or table, and even burn it to cook a meal. There are many such admonitions to include the golden calf, Baal, Asher poles, etc.

Why would the same God who tells us not to forge/adore idols tell us how to create an idol? I believe that God is as true and constant as the Bible makes Him out to be.

Short response: No, the kneeling cherubim are decorations on a specially designed suitcase designed to carry the all important memo of the Old Covenant that He provided at our request. Why not burden the morons who thought they knew better than Him by having them make an intricate, heavy, and deadly container to carry the laws that they insisted upon?

If you have an alternate point of view, I am willing to consider it if it seems to have merits. In fact, I welcome it - what better way to explore our faith than to have discussions/debates/arguments about how we perceive things? In the end, God will win because the more one looks at Him, no matter what the reason/agenda, His Truth will outshine all else.

It’s like a Harvey Weinstein film being projected above the altar. The kids love it!

The commandment against graven images applies specifically to idols for purpose of worship.

NOT to every carved thing.

This is substantiated by the instructions for the carving of the Ark of the Covenant.

The statue of Christ in Rio is NOT for purpose of worship.
