And why do Russians like hanging rugs on their walls???

Most Russians live in apartments bordered by thin walls. Hanging rugs on the walls provided sound insulation, making it harder for their next-door neighbors to eavesdrop on their conversations.

Russian centralized steam heating works extraordinarily well. You'll find yourself opening the windows in January to let some of the heat out! Interestingly, there's no thermostat. The heat comes on in the winter and is turned off in the summer. Everyone's heat.

The rugs are for privacy, to make it more difficult for neighbors to eavesdrop on your conversations.

I read commentary earlier this morning that said it was because the walls are/were so thin that rugs were hug to try and soundproof the rooms (I’m guessing it helps with temp control, too). It may have become habit or a part of culture now?

LOL! (in a sad way) Putin doesn’t want those pictures seen either. Er, I mean the “lyin’ king”. (Course, I may trust Putin more. Yeah, probably.)

They probably won’t show the slums/shacks/shanty towns in Rio either.

Sochi is an unusual choice given the climate. I just looked it up and it is much more similar to Atlanta than a winter sports destination like Lake Placid.

I visited a friend in Russia in the 90s. She said Moscow apartments were absolutely airtight— no cold seeping in. So the rags must be for the privacy. Also, maybe they need to let them air dry after using them, since they probably don’t have washer/dryer hookups in apartments? Finally, for years Russians had to paint walls with whatever color was available, so maybe throwing a few rags on the wall helped to hide a gross color.

Someone musta done one hell of a marketing presentation. Subbed pictures from Gstaad or Verbier or something. Read somewhere this morning that the womens downhill had to moved from Garmisch to Italy due to lack of snow. I know we sure have a lack of snow around Tahoe. Way lacking. Need big snow dump. Dang algore and his glo-bull warming. Or maybe it’s just La Nina or El Nino. (Hissss-panics causing a problem?)

The DailyMail is publishing these on behalf of homosexual activists who want to damage Russia.

My first thought, too.

There's a big chance terrorists will try to disrupt these Games...

Which is perhaps why Putin chose Sochi. Supposedly, he has placed a 1500 mile security circle around the place. What better excuse to go after any terrorist, and I"m not even putting terrorist in scare-quotes, because this what they are.

Most of the photos make me want to visit the place.

NOT during the Olympics though.

I would NEVER waste my time and money on any sports event other than four wheeling or rally racing.
