Skip to comments.[Vanity] Cannot Find A New Doctor Under My Employer Plan Since Year End
Posted on 01/19/2014 2:32:55 PM PST by fwdude
My family doctor of over 12 years "retired" from practice at the end of last year. In his letter to his patients, he wasn't subtle about a main reason being radical changes in the healthcare industry starting in 2014.
Since then, I've searched the directory of my insurer's website for a replacement, with little luck. Call me an "Islamophobe," but I refuse to establish a doctor/patient relationship with someone with a Muslim-sounding name, which now seem to proliferated in the directory under these bottom-of-the-barrel street corner emergency clinics (which I consider training grounds.) When I called several safe-sounding doctors after doing some cursory research, I learned that they were no longer in practice either.
This is getting really scary. Has anyone else had a similar experience since last year and are finding themselves doctor-less for the first time in their life?
Too late. I got the flu.
Don’t complain. You’ll be death paneled.
Wasn’t one of the stated advantages of Obamacare was to reduce emergency room visits? Guess where all the people in your situation will have to go when ill?
Muslim sounding names? Are you sure they are not from India?
Poverty sucks. Enjoy what you have left of your life and cherish those around you.
That’s the key to surviving the “very popular” ObamaCare. Never get sick.
I think you are being a bit ridiculous, frankly. Just because someone has a Muslim name does not mean he is a poor doctor.
I recognize the difference. However, the Indian names were all under the “drive thru” clinic umbrellas. Not very encouraging.
Good advice. Thanks.
Let us all thank Willard-the-RAT ROmney for beginning
this as RomneyCARE. Massachusetts LEADS as the highest
costs, and long waits since the Romney and Scott Brown
(also voting for this) began this travesty.
I fully understand. The doctors my elderly parents see are Indian. There are few if any American doctors remaining that accept Medicare in East Texas. They are not bad but it is frightening to see how dependent on foreigners America has become to provide medical services. Worse, my father has an affirmative action cardiologist. Please don’t get me started on the dreadful ‘care’ he receives from that lout. Working on finding another one.
Our biggest clinic in town has a sign when you walk in the door, they will not accept insurance from the exchanges.
That probably eleminates half the doctors in town.
Sorry to hear you are having such troubles..
I haven’t been to my GP in over 3 years..
Wishing you the best of luck!
The problem the insurance groups have, is you can’t send patients to where the care is cheapest. Therefore, you have to bring the cheapest healthcare providers here. Kinda the opposite of outsourcing manufacturing to China.
I’m just going to be very frank here and it may offend you or others, and I’m sorry if it does but if you want medical care you are being ridiculous to discard people with “Muslim sounding names”.
I have had some of the best care from 2 doctors with “Muslim sounding names”. I mean, you don’t know where they come from unless you ask! One doctor I had came from Nigeria and he was marvelous.
Are you also adverse to seeing black doctors? Or women? It’s very similar - discrimination or prejudice makes you the loser in medical care.
The Doctor I had used for many years closed his practice around five years ago. Finding another one was more trouble than I would have thought. Two local ones simply said they were not taking on any more patients.
I finally found one I like but he has too many patients. It is always a two hour visit.
In the mean time I had used the emergency room a couple of times. Once the Dr. looked like he had just come from Saudi Arabia but in fact he was quite pleasant and frankly was clearly very intelligent. The other one resembled the Shah of Iran and was just plain rude. He did not really look Arabic but had a Muslim name.
Ah, when the “discrimination” and “prejudice” cards come out, you show yourself as a leftist troll. Get lost.
I go to a clinic and my dr is from Pakistan. I went to my regular dr Thursday. When the nurse checked my bp, it was the highest it has ever been-—198/100. When I go to the clinic it is 120/80 but when I had to go to the ER last year, It was 110/75. There is something about my dr that cuses my bp to change. My eye had been hurting for a few days before then and was still hurting so that had something to do with it. I have an appt with an eye surgeon next month. Oh, the day before my dr’s appt, was thev10th anniversary of my daughter’s death and he said that had a lot to do with it. I told my family that itbwasca good thing undid not haveva dr’s appt today deter what happened yesterday.
I have been sick so was in a recliner by the front window. I heard a truck so glanced out the window. A black truck had pulled up by my car from the other direction and while I was watching, my trunk opened while he was still in his truck. How and why?
I used an Indian doctor for several years. He was as good as they come,
a christian, even held a song/prayer service in his office ever Friday
morning before opening for patients. Point being don’t get to hung up on
names but rather try to find out about them if you can find anyone that
I think you better check into things deeper before you throw the name leftist troll around. I’ve been on FR for 10 years, longer than you and I don’t believe I’ve ever said something similar to someone here.
Your obvious prejudices are quite likely going to hurt you in the future when you can’t find any other doctor, but so be it.
Learn the difference between Islamic names and Indian names.
Indian names like Gupta or Singh are usually OK.
I’ve been here under a former name since the 2000 election. Anyway, longevity don’t mean squat when ideology is apparent.
I well know the difference, thanks.
Think what you like. Several on this thread are telling you the same thing, only being more courteous about it. You’re a great example of cutting your nose off to spite your face.
If you’re in an ER and dying are you going to say you don’t want treatment by anyone with a Muslim sounding name?
I have no ill will toward my former doctor, in fact I support his decision.
If more would shrug people would sit up and notice.
Either that, or his ‘prejudices’ will save his life.
They aren’t really ‘prejudices’, they are ‘postjudices’, perhaps based on evidence already discussed here on FR.
We're not discussing emergency cases here, now are we?
Let's but this into perspective by changing your sentence to how I see things, then you can give your opinion back.
"If youre in an ER and dying are you going to say you dont want treatment by anyone with a name that sounds similar to the names of those pilots who tried to fly their planes full of passengers into the ground because the doctor might have the same attitudes about infidels?"
Yes, Fort Worth. Far west side is the problem. A Dallas drive would mean a good hour or more, in good traffic.
I think you mean between Muslim and Hindu names. Or something.
Anyway, India is 13.4% Muslim.
Everyone is not the same as the people that did 9/11. Really.
Are you the same as the people that lynched black people or used blacks as slaves? I think not.
I was very sorry to lose my Muslim PA last ever. No else else has ever sat and listened like she would. She would also let me kid her a little about being Muslim here where we have few.
I’m sorry you lost someone like that - good providers are hard to find. I hope you have a good one now!
Hispanic this time. Has a good reputation. I have actually not seen any correlation between ethnicity or national origin and competency. Seems to have more to do with personality characteristics. There would be exceptions in certain specialties which are not as advanced in some particular country (yet).
I didn’t say everyone is the same as those who flew the planes on 9/11. (I wasn’t referring to them, I was referring to those muslim pilots who tried to fly their passenger laden planes into the ocean)
But the only way we have at the moment to distinguish between those doctors who care about all humanity, and those who consider most Americans infidels, are their names and appearances.
Not much, and extremely crude, but anyone who puts their life in the hands of someone who considers them infidels, and lower than a dog is being foolish.
It's not at all similar. Distrust of Muslims is in no way related to dislike of women or blacks.
My sister lives about 80 miles from Boston which,as you may (or may not) know,is where some world most famous hospitals are located. At my strong urging, she decided long ago to establish her health care, and that of her kids,in Boston despite the fact that it meant a 1 hour (plus) drive for appointments.Baylor is also recognized as being one of the finest hospitals in the world. Is an hour drive to get just about the finest care available worth it? That's up to you to decide.
BTW,I worked at one of the major Boston hospitals for 20+ years and in that time I learned a thing or two about top tier health care in this country.
but so far I have noticed that Indian Moslim names are different than Indian Hindu or Christian names.
My situation, while not the same, is a little frightening as well.
My wife works for a state agency and in 2013, we had a choice of about a dozen health care insurance plans. As of 1/1/14, we have two, Kaiser and a self funded plan that involves using UC campus facilities only. So if we chose the self-funded plan we would be treated by med school students.
Also, during 2013, we had to prove that we were married (supplying a 35 year old marriage certificate) and had to state whether or not I had insurance through my employer (since I’m self employed I don’t have other insurance).
So besides having to go to Kaiser this year, I’m afraid that in 2015, I will be dropped from my wife’s plan and be on my own, in the Obamacare marketplace.
I've only dealt with one doctor from a foreign nation I did not like. She was from India and I stopped going to her because she had no business being in her profession or even practicing any discipline of medicine. My niece took my sister to that same doctor years later she too said no more. My niece is married to man of India ancestry. Second generation USA. Great guy and great parents.
It’s easy to duplicate a remote if you have the right equipment.
I lived in Canada until late 1991. healthcare in Canada is handled at the provincial level, so each province had its own plan. Healthcare is the largest item in each of the provincial budgets, so any time there is a fiscal conservative or a push to cut spending, healthcare gets extra scrutiny. It was completely reformed in 1989 in Ontario with changes to how doctors and healthcare providers are paid by limiting the number of procedures that doctors could perform per week and per year. For example, surgeons were limited to the number of surgical procedures done in a day or week with limits much lower than typical busy city doctors. This cut some of their annual income levels significantly, which lead to many leaving Canada and moving south to the US where such restrictions were not placed on them. This was called the “brain drain” and I expect it will happen here but I think 0bamacare has caused doctors to retire early because of the way it is structured and restrictions on how they do their work. Things in the healthcare world have deteriorated significantly in Canada since the early ‘90’s and 0bamacare has set us on the same path.
Keep looking for the right doctor for your family. 0bamacare will not make getting healthcare better but it will be much worse. The goal of all federal politicians running federally in 2014 should be to repeal or defund 0bamacare.
My doctor retired in Feb, 2013, citing obamacare. Luckily, I was able to get another doctor (actually Nurse Practioner) in the same group.
That is what my daughter said. That someone had found a way to open my make/year car’s trunk and because my battery was dead maybe that was all the power it had. This is a high tech area, too.
