Military now eligible for expedited screening at airports

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- If you're an active duty or reservist airman at Hill Air Force and you're planning to travel by plane, you can now step to the front of the line.

Pentagon and Transportation Security Administration officials recently announced that all U.S. Department of Defense service members will be eligible for expedited pre-flight screening at airports -- which means they'll be able to get into an express line where they don't need to remove their shoes and belts or take laptops, iPads or liquids out of their baggage.

The new policy is effective immediately, but troops must use their DoD identification number when making flight reservations in order to get the expedited service.

Once a service member books an airline ticket, the airline sends the ID number and other pertinent information to TSA's Secure Flight office, a program that maintains a criminal and terrorist watch list.

Troops will not be required to be in uniform for the service, but will be given a special boarding pass that allows them to get into the expedited, pre-flight line.

The expedited screening will be available to all members of the Armed Forces, including the Coast Guard and members of the National Guard and Reserves. Not eligible are personnel in the Individual Ready Reserve, military retirees and DoD civilians. Non-military spouses and children over the age of 12 are not eligible for the program either.

Mary Snavely-Dixon, director, of the Defense Manpower Data Center, said the DoD is working with the TSA to expand the program further.

TSA Deputy Administrator John W. Halinski, a 25-year Marine Corps veteran, said the TSA will continue to incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout airports and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.

TSA already has a program available for injured and wounded service members to make air travel as simple as possible. That program includes personalized service and expedited screening to move through security checkpoints without having to take off footwear, light outerwear, jackets or headgear.

If you’re a muslim serviceman you probably can skip screening altogether. They might even let you sit in the cockpit.

As nice as this is, nowadays EVERYONE has expedited screening.

Frequent flyers have been pissed (and rightfully so) that people who did NOT pay (through pocket or service) and did not go through screening are getting “randomly” selected for Pre-check.

Last weekend, both the “premium” lines and the pre-check lines had about 100 people in each one. There were only about 15 people in the regular line so I got in that one and was able to make it through pretty quickly (at least they sent me to Pre-Check).

Idea: Get rid of the stupid shoe, light jacket and laptop removal and let the lines flow for EVERYONE. Don’t pretend you have special screening evaluation and then just give it to anyone.

In the meantime, the best I can do is let Uniformed Military get in line in front of me.

And that is the way we rolled back in RIC — we ALWAYS let the military board first.

What I’d rather do ... I save for Black Widows every once in a while. I do make exceptions.

No, according to directives of our Depts of State and DHS, they are still behind the Muslim Brotherhood.

That’s good, but all Americans and permanent residents should be traveling freely between the freer countries without such hinderances. If our nation wants to fight and win a war, it should do so. Universal surveillance is not the answer. It’s only a morale buster.

This is not a good thing. We are devolving into a dangerous two-tiered system of Government first, Citizens last. I have nothing against a citizen voluntarily deferring to anyone he chooses to favor, but an official policy that favors military and police over the citizens they are employed to serve is a dangerous precedent. This creature is going to turn around and bite its well-intentioned but naive worshipers.

As a retired military person I don’t think this is a good idea for different reasons. Remember the airliner back in the late 80’s or early 90’s that got hijacked with a couple military members on it? The muslim hijackers killed a military member just because. Asking for military members to board first singles them out. Traveling to and from my first duty station in Turkey was to be conducted in civilian clothes only according to my orders.

My military career spanned from the age 18 to 39. I was perfectly capable of standing in line while waiting for some handicapped and older folks to board. I was SERVING the country, not being served BY the country.

Not long ago, there was an article of some TSA agents scanning soldiers’ WEAPONS in the X ray machine. How dumb is that?
