NFL commissioner Roger Goodell talked to the leagues network on Monday about a number of different topics, several of which included possible rule changes.
One of the issues discussed was the idea of eliminating extra points after touchdowns, which Goodell says are just about automatic.

Good. Get it done right the first time.
Extra points say Roger Goodell can be eliminated!
Give extra points for longer field goals instead.
Fine - just as long as you get rid of the female sideline reporters. I can’t hit the mute button fast enough.
Why mess with something that works
Without it it would be just run, score, kickoff, run, score, kickoff... it is part of the game and there are strategies
There is nothing more exciting than a fake kick of a point after or a muffed kick run in for a two point or fumbled and run back for a touchdown...
You are not so high and mighty and smarter than all else who came before you to decide this.
leave it alone
Might as well get rid of kickoffs too, and just give each team the ball at the 20.
And don’t forget trophies for everyone for participating!
Alright!! More time for commercials after that touchdown!!
Down by 5 and someone goes for a 60 yard-5 point field goal.
Would make people stay till end-thats for sure.
To me it’s disappointing the league hasn’t moved the kickoff back to compensate for the bigger, stronger, improved technique kickers.
Watching all those touchbacks is a major waste.
Shut up, Roger Goodell.
Just leave the scoring system in tact.
Good idea, graduated for “degree of difficulty”.
Protecting the few NFL jobs held by slow white guys!
The idiots should leave the game ALONE!
Sure it’s automatic... if the team actually GOES for the extra point, instead of the two-point conversion. THERE lies the drama!
Soon the morons will turn the NFL into flag football.
I think the extra point should be 45 yards, and returnable.
His goal will be to replace them with several more TV commercials. How else to gain revenue?
During the 2013 and 2012 season 2501 XP were attempted, 2490 were made (99.56%).
My suggestion is no field goals in the last 2 minutes of the game.
I said this on the other thread but I’ll put it here too. Anybody that really thinks the PAT should stay needs to rewatch the Eagles-Lions snow game where conditions lead to only one attempted PAT (after penalty, blocked) and explain how the lack of these automatic kicks made the game worse. That was one of the best games of the year. I’m not sure the plan Goodell is putting out of just giving them the point unless they go for 2 is good, I prefer making them go for 2 every time, but that game shows that getting the boring automatic 1 out of the game won’t hurt it.
The non-kicking team cannot run back blocked or missed extra points. Can’t do anything with ‘em, in fact.
Kick the extra points from the 20 instead of the 10. It would have three benefits: the extra point would be likely but less automatic, the lower kicking angle would make it possible to block the kick, and it would also make for more two-point tries because the one-pointer would be less of a sure thing.
That drama will stay, what they’re getting rid of is the lack of drama of a kick that succeeds over 99% of the time. All the proposals keep the possibility of going for 2.
So I guess that would eliminate that “automatic” two point conversion also.
How about intentional walks in baseball ( I mean actually going through the exercise of the pitcher throwing the pitches rather than waving the batter to first)? I’ll bet each has about the same effect on the outcome of games... every once in a while...
It's way before most people's time, but once Clay Dalrymple, a catcher for the Phillies in the early '60s, was being intentionally walked; he decided to swing at one of the pitches that came close to the plate, and hit into a double play. Back to our regularly scheduled discussion...
leave it alone
Completely agree. The field goal is almost automatic too, why not get rid of that. And all this passing, we could just make everyone kick the ball with their feet!
The NFL is getting WAY to big for their shoulder pads! It's a real sport, with years of tradition. There is currently an excellent continuity between the high school, college and pro games.
There’s a theory out there (I call it a theory because I’m not convinced) that the kickoff return results in more injuries, especially head injuries, than any other play. So yes they moved it up to get more touchbacks and fewer concussions. They definitely got the more touchbacks, not sure about the rest because honestly I don’t remember seeing that many guys carted off the field after kickoffs. Passes to the middle seem to be the most dangerous play when I watch.
While your at it, make it 2 strikes and your out to shorten a baseball game. If it ain’t broke - don’t fix it!
I thought I was the only one who didn’t like this part of the game. And I’m a woman. It looks like they had to find a job for women sportscasters, so they came up with this.
Like shooting baskets at the three ring line. Kick from 60yds.
If they would get rid of the automatic one pointer, have the 2 point conversion not be an option, but a substitute for the extra point.
I remember Clay! He probably cost Ueker his job.
I wouldn’t like that because it could reward loss of yardage (in order to make the field goal longer)
I’ve been thinking that they should move the point after kick attempt back 5-10 yards.
I’ve also been thinking that Roger Goodell is about the worst thing to happen to football since the game was invented.
It’s just about completely unwatchable.
You are 100% correct, and they did it a MAX of 2 years ago (might even have been this year); not likely to change it back.
Four words: Tony Romo in Seattle
They could go back to the original extra-points rule (still used that way in Rugby) where the kick has to be taken on a line with the point where the touchdown was made. That makes it far from automatic.
He is wrong. THe choice of 1 or two point conversion adds a lot of int3erst to the game.
Id the thinks the PAT kicks are too easy, then move them back.
I’ve not really noticed the females on the sideline. I mean, I know they’re there, but are they terrible or something? EEO hires?
They could always go to mid-field and use this technique.
Nobody would get injured then...
Those 20 yards are sort of like welfare checks. If you’re not willing to work, you still get something of value.
How about making a touchdown 7 points, and then give the scoring team the option of going for 2 more, but if they fail they lose a point?
"NFL" becomes........."National FANTASY League"
To make extra points more challenging the cheerleaders should shed their tops and dance in the end zone and provide distraction to the kicker.
And that would also eliminate the 2 point conversion. Leave it alone, or maybe make it a longer and more difficult kick.
This idea mostly fits into the “if it ain’t broke” category.
