“People looted the snack shelves because there was a chem spill?”

Not that I heard of. Seriously and I would have been the first to report it had it happened. If you recall I was the one who first started posting on this and followed it through.

Speaking g from experience the first thing that go are bottled drinks and foods which are ready to eat. They go fast.

Kudos to Walmart. Say what you what, but if the government was to privatize disaster recovery operations I would bet a organization like Walmart would leave FEMA in the dust!

They go fast but I was in the stores when this happened and I was in the Capitol City when the news broke. There was a stampede on water but the shelves did not look like the one in that picture and I was in several stores. People were in a hurry and concerned but not to the point of panic that they did crap like that.

Most people came in stores and asked “do you have water?” If they did not have water people just bought cola, juice or other drinks by the cart load. Were no fights or disorder. To tell you the truth was a bigger shopping day than Black Friday.

I have to agree with that. WalMart really came through. I can’t speak for other stores because I was not able to make it out to any others but my local Wal Mart must have brought in several semi’s of water because not only did they have it in the front of the store but tons of it piled high in the back waiting to be put up front.

All kinds of bottled water too. Water by the gallon or those individual servings. They dropped the prices on all of them because of this.

On top of this many churches, fire departments, other groups were giving away free water in every city. It was all over the news where people could go for the “water stations”.

“If such a minor disruption cause such choas what would you think would happen if some real SHTF came?”

Here is the reality:
Before Hurricane Ike came in at Galveston, there were days to prepare. When it came through Houston, as soon as it passed Houston, I saw on TV people demanding water and food right that minute - I mean immediately. I couldn't believe my eyes - they didn't have one bottle of water and no food.

I thought about that, why that would happen. I think those people saw this hurricane as a way to get “free stuff”. They planned it this way - don't spend money on water and food - wait for the free stuff the govn. will give you. In an emergency that hits the whole country, free stuff won't be there and these people will be the first to die.

An extended family member of my husband's during that time called us to brag about the fact he got some free water and ice from FEMA! - absolutely free!, they gave it to him. He was beside himself that he got that free stuff. He wanted to know if we got free stuff. I told him we had two large ice chests and an insulated water jug full of ice WE BOUGHT and we had over a hundred gallons of OUR good water stored. He said, “You are better off than I am.” He sounded sad that we had all that. My estimation of that man's worth to the world, hit the bottom.

So, consider there are some people who won't store ANYTHING no matter the problem because they are depending on FEMA and free stuff.

“Speaking g from experience the first thing that go are bottled drinks...”

Except for one juice. That afternoon before Ike came through, I realized I had a kidney infection and was on the phone to the doctor to get antibiotics before the drug store closed. I sent my husband during that time to the store to get Cranberry juice for the infection. The store was totally cleaned out of every juice, EXCEPT FOR CRANBERRY JUICE. There was plenty of Cranberry juice. My husband and I had a big laugh over that.

Keep that in mind if you need liquid to drink - check for Cranberry juice - I guess no one likes it enough to buy it even though they know every store is going to be closed as soon as the storm goes through.

We keep three of the blue 55 gallon water containers filled and in our garage at all times plus a Big Berkey water filtration system. We filter every drop that comes out of our tap to get rid of the flouride and clorine and god knows what else thats in it.

Doesn’t the water need replacing periodically?

Wal-Mart has quite the emergency plan nationwide when there are events. I’ve been impressed how rapidly they get to a site.

Yes from time to time you need to replace it. We are planning once or twice a year. Its not as important to us because we have the filtration system.

I live in a rural area which may react differently than urban areas. Getting to and returning from a store may take the better part of a day so most probably have more food at home than those in urban areas. We didn’t see any chaos during the power outage after the derecho. Most folks worked together. No one went crazy trying to find gasoline although a few tired to fill 55 gallon barrels to scalp it. The only out right thievery involved the stealing of some portable enumerators set up by the phone company.

What happens in a real SHTF incident depends on a lot of factors.

My sister-i-law told me what happened in Los Angeles back in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

It looked like we were on the verge of war! PANIC ensued! People were storming the grocery shelves, grabbing food off the shelves as fast as they could, as much as they could get in a cart and car!

People were fleeing the city as fast as they could! Wrecks were at many intersections! Roads became blocked due to wrecks! Choked streets with people trying to flee any way they could!

Meanwhile we in the middle of the USA were glued to the TV trying to figure what we needed to do. The freezers were full, we had lots of canned food, but the pucker factor was still there.
Then it all came to an end, we thought.

That December 31, about 10 PM, there was a break in the news for a FLASH! NORAD had spotted incoming over the DEW Line in Canada! The pucker factor returned!

Then they showed a silly photo of Santa Clause with fake clouds floating by.

We were relieved, but POed at the same time because it was too close to the October crisis and we were still on edge.

“On top of this many churches, fire departments, other groups were giving away free water in every city.”

I’d heard that usually the first group to show up at any U.S. disaster scene is the organization of Southern Baptist men. Apparently they’re always stocked up and staged, and ready to go at a moment’s notice Funny that MSM never mentions that; it’s always FEMA or Red Cross.
