Indiana police chief running for sheriff accidentally shoots himself for SECOND time in career
Daily Mail ^ | January 21, 2014 | LUKE GARRATT

Police Chief David Counceller's 40-caliber Glock handgun accidentally discharged last Saturday while he was at Wulff's gun shop examining a handgun similar to the one he carries - he shot himself in the leg.

Counceller, 60, who was off duty at the time, said: 'I need to pay more attention. I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part.'

-snip-

But he said he sees the accident as an opportunity in his run ahead of May's primary. He said: 'If anyone says this could never happen to them, they’re mistaken.'

'You have to keep your guard up at all times. Some candidates are out there doing things for kids to try to get elected. 'Me, I shoot myself. What a way to get publicity.'

” It was pure carelessness on my part.”

Finally someone admits it.

Hey Bro, he doesn’t get a chance to shoot dogs, he shoots himself first. :-)

Ok he’s right about carelessness but he seems to have an irrational fear of firearms.

Barney Fife made it all the way to police chief?

Doing it once is one thing... Twice means he didn’t learn the first time.

But he’s right about part of it: anyone who believes it could never happen to them is wrong.

"How does one accidentally shoot oneself with modern firearms, especially semi-automatics? Did he have the hammer back? Is there no transfer bar on that model?"

You have to warm up with a TASER:

The term for that would be negligent discharge, ND for short. Yeah I’ve had one, shot my belt, my shorts, a box of office supplies, the closet door, and the concrete floor. Fortunately I wasn’t wearing the shorts and belt at the time. Retired the 1911, hands getting to knarley to rack the chamber clear reliably.

If the firearm is handled properly, it will not happen.

Deputy Dufus screwed up twice. It's lucky he didn't kill someone.

The safety on a GLock is on the trigger. And the trigger is only 5 1/2 lbs. A lot of people accidentally shoot themselves with Glock by not using a holster or accidentally touching the trigger when putting it away. About 15 years ago, a sheriff in VA accidentally shot himself when he put his Glock into his trouser pocket and his car keys snagged the trigger.

There is no such thing as an accidental discharge.

A negligent discharge is caused by either ignorance or carelessness.

The person can be considered ignorant, if they have not been trained.

They are careless, if they disregard their training.

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use

I conceal carry a Glock 19 everyday...i don’t understand how this happened. The odds of his clothing getting tangled at just the right angle to pull the Glock trigger has to be astronomical. Some thing tells me he was careless with his trigger finger. Only way that gun will fire.
