Jelly Belly Debuts BEER-Flavored Jelly Bean (NOT satire)
TODAY.com ^ | 1/21/14 | Amy Eley

For more than 100 years, Jelly Belly has been a leading name in the jelly bean industry, with flavors like Buttered Popcorn, Toasted Marshmallow and Bubble Gum. And now? Beer.

Jelly Belly debuted Draft Beer as its newest flavor on Saturday. While the news comes only one month after the December release of its Tabasco Dark Chocolate flavor, the latest addition to the Jelly Belly family is one that has been three years in the making.

“Our fans have been asking for a beer Jelly Bean for years,” Rob Swaigen, Jelly Belly’s vice president of marketing, told TODAY.com. “It took a few years to perfect, but we think we got it right.”

To pay homage to Jelly Belly’s German ancestry, the company matched the taste of the candy to a Hefeweizen ale — but don’t add Draft Beer jelly beans to the cocktail bar just yet.

I don't know whether this is a major advancement in food....or a sign that we're getting closer to the Apocalypse.

In a previous life, I worked for the company who distributed Jelly Belly products in Japan. They are a great company and fine people to work with.

This was the brand of jelly beans which President Reagan kept on his desk to share with visitors . . . and one of the few I've eaten which doesn't taste like flavored sugar. They really are good.

And, who knows? A beer flavored jelly bean might get someone to give up real beer. I took the no alcohol pledge the day BO was sworn into office. I wasn't even close to being an alcoholic, but was genuinely afraid I was on the road to becoming one unless I took the pledge.

for some reason, i always get a kick out of the buttered popcorn Jelly Belly... it really tastes like buttered popcorn... once they come up with the pizza-flavored Jelly Belly, you can have it with the beer-flavored Jelly Belly!

Thanks! I've got to get there again soon. The last time we went was in the summer of 2009 when we were in town for a nephew's wedding.

We loved the library, but spent too much of the day in traffic getting there from the Riverside/San Bernardino area.

Beer-flavored Jelly Beans doesn’t sound that appetizing.

Maybe Jelly Belly flavored beer is better?

I went to JB’s website and they have a line of flavors likely inspired by the ‘Harry Potter’ universe’s ‘Bernie Botts All-Flavor Beans’. Basically, they’re marketing it as a game of sorts....you dare your friends to try one to see if it’s the ‘real’ flavor or it identical counterpart that tastes like....well, to give you an idea, here’s their offerings:

Lime/Lawn Clippings
Berry Blue/Toothpaste (might not be TOO bad)
Peach/Puke
Caramel Corn/Moldy Cheese
Chocolate Pudding/Canned Dog Food
Coconut/Baby Wipes
Juicy Pear/Booger
Tutti Frutti/Stinky Socks
Buttered Popcorn/Rotten Egg
Licorice/Skunk Spray

My question: How on Earth did they come up with the proper way some of the joke beans taste???? The mind boggles.

Now, why HAVEN’T they come out with Bacon???

My personal downfall: Blueberry. They got the flavor JUST right. I once (as a 25-year-old) ate an entire 1/2 pound bag I’d purchased in a candy store within 2 hours. I will not go into the effect it had on me....suffice it to say that food dyes can and do color...other things.

“I want them to come out with a cabernet to go along with my Round Table pizza!”

Well, we will pass this along to a friend, a wine maker in wino country, and a relative to the creators of Jelly Belly great flavors.

He is making some great blends with red wines.

The Jelly Belly factory was a favorite touring place for our grandkids in pre school and elementary. We were glad to volunteer to help with their classmates in happy tours.

Probably a wise move -- there's a working theory I have that the incidence of alcoholism increases as tyranny increases, a sort of self-medication / self-determination that is generally denied under tyranny.

Bad news for the “I want Pizza-flavored Jelly Belly” crowd: We took the factory tour a few years ago and learned that they tried to make a pizza flavored bean. It didn’t work. It tasted terrible and was rechristened “vomit” flavor.

First you eat the beer jelly bean, then you eat the puke jelly bean! I love the pear, buttered popcorn, and cinnamon jelly bellys. Tutti frutti is good, too.
