I love this song.

It’s interesting how things are coming around full circle.

It’s a song back in 1970’s that Neil Young wrote and sung that I was listening to tonight and couldn’t help think about the state of our Country at this time.

There are a boat load of songs that were written by leftists in the 60’s and 70’s that could easily be turned against them today.

However, it requires them to actually listen and think.

That is because people now are constantly mistaking all of the 1960s crowd as leftists, much of it wasn’t.

Yuppies were lefties, many college kids were liberal or leftist, but many authentic hippies were not political and were into rediscovering the past and owning guns and self sufficiency, they were rejecting much of what many of us reject now.

Bob Dylan hasn’t changed, and when you listen to his music of the 1960s, you will hear rebellion and freedom, not the left.

I was a lefty in college all Peace and Love. It was late 60’s early 70’s.
After I got married and settled down, working, earning money and being in the business environment I learned pretty quick what was going on.

I agree. I think the lefty culture may have adopted some of the music for their own ideals.

Some of those musicians changed and fell in line with the leftist culture at that time.

If you listen to Jim Morrison, “An American Prayer”, it’s very hard core but I think he is attacking the culture that is actually his fans.

Here is Sonny Bono, when he and Cher were a team.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThanhXlwzJc

I’m glad I’m here just like you
And if I say a thing or two
That doesn’t mean I’m all that mad
Or that I think this place is bad
We got a land and the land is free
And no one loves it more than me

CHORUS:
But a man’s got a right to talk about
What’s on his mind
That doesn’t necessary mean
He’s a revolution kind

Destruction is near we heard the moans
But I got conclusions of my own
Have I got some kid I have to teach
That if somebody makes a speech
And what he said you don’t agree
Just let him scream the man is free

Chorus

These words all have been said before
By men who have to go to war
By men who cried and kiss their wife
By men who had to give their life
By better men than me
That’s why this land we have is free

Thanks for sharing this. 1971. Very intense.

Like others here, I am left to consider where the free world was at that moment in time... and what has become of it.

I came along a few years later and grew out of my pot smoking heavy metal mindless existence to find my way in the real world.

My musical tastes shifted to actual music and lyrics that had meaning.

It is extraordinary what is considered good or what is popular among today’s youth. Maybe these kids know that it’s all a “production”, but they eat it up, maybe they don’t know ? Maybe they know and don’t care ?

Maybe, I have very little faith that they will grow out of it.

20th Century Man” is a song recorded by British rock band The Kinks. It was released as a single in December 1971. “20th Century Man” was also featured as the opening track of their 1971 LP Muswell Hillbillies

Snip

I was born in a welfare state
Ruled by bureaucracy
Controlled by civil servants
And people dressed in grey
Got no privacy, got no liberty
Cos the twentieth century people
Took it all away from me.

“There’s a world” where an “Old Man” can be “Out on the weekend”. With a “Heart of Gold” just to “Sail away” on his “Cripple Creek Ferry” “Till the morning Comes”. “Tell me why” “After the Gold rush” “A man needs a Maid”.
