Rat-Infested Ghost Ship Lyubov Orlova Barrels Toward Land
Wunderground ^

Posted on 01/24/2014 7:21:38 AM PST by chessplayer

If you thought Ghost Ship was just another Hollywood horror-flick, brace yourself. According to The Independent, an abandoned, cannibalistic rat-infested, 1,565 ton Soviet-era cruise liner could be just another winter storm away from colliding with the coast of the United Kingdom or Ireland, and Canadian authorities may be to blame.

Is there some reason why England must welcome these rats to their shore?

Couldn’t they just round up some hungry stray cats and drop them in for dinner?

Some smart cookie might come up with an idea like;

Shoot through every orofice you can, flaming sulphur bombs ... keep doing it for a full 24 hours or something.

Let a week go by, board the thing and sweep up the carcasses and feed the fish.

Just a thought

As for the rats? The National Post reports that the Lyubov Orlova sat in port for more than two years in Newfoundland, "virtually guaranteeing" the ship acquired a rat infestation. After a nearly year adrift with no food, many British media outlets believe that the rats may have turned on each other in order to survive.

Whether or not the cannibal rats make landfall remains to be seen, but Irish authorities are bracing for impact.

So the most sensational part of the story -- that the ship is infested with bloodthirsty, canibalistic rats -- is pure speculation. And Irish authorities are "bracing for impact" based on that speculation. Gotta love it. The fact that their navy doesn't just sink the damn thing and instead everyone wrings their hands is a telling commentary on what the West has become.

I don’t know much about Admiralty Law, but it seems clear that the previous owners made a conscious decision to abandon the ship. That being the case, would it not belong to the first person who took possession of it?

Could this be a suggested location for the upcoming GOP policy retreat? Boehner and cannibal rats has a certain symmetry to it.

For heaven’s sake, this isn’t a submarine. If the British navy has deteriorated so severely that it can’t find a large surface ship which is taking no evasive actions, it could ask for U.S. assistance. I’m sure our military satellites could find it in no time. Something as big as a cruise ship cannot escape detection for too long, even in the vastness of the north Atlantic.

He problem isn’t the ship. The problem is Greenpeace and the environmental groups that will go get their panties in a wad if this ship is sunk.

So....

Turn the ship into a reef and diving exhibit.

Click below to hear Lyubov Orlova, the ship's namesake sing the Soviet patriotic song "Shiroka Strana, Moya Rodnaya" (vast country, my homeland) in the movie "Circus." Radio Moscow fans will recognize the first few notes as the station's call sign. The words go as follows:
Vast country, my homeland,
Full of mountains, forests and rivers
I don't know of another country
Where a man would want to breathe...

In big golden letters,
We write the Stalinist code.

If he were smart, this could be an Obama jobs program. Get a mothballed Naval frigate, man it with unemployed citizens, tow the derelict and sell it for scrap. Proceeds get split among the crew. If I didn’t have a job, I’d try to make money off this!

This is the same British Navy that a few years ago captured a group of pirates, fed them a halal meal and then set them back ashore in Somalia. Don't the rats deserve at least the same consideration?

Hopefully the plot will be as good as in the amazing, bulldada movie Death Ship (1980).

http://www.badmovies.org/movies/deathship/

Starring America’s greatest president, George Kennedy, as well as Richard Crenna.

Part of its reviews:

“I spent about thirty minutes washing my mouth out after watching this crap... Make sure you have lots of alcohol on hand before popping this tape in the VCR.”

Honest to goodness, it is now available both as a “remastered” DVD and on Blu-Ray.

If this vessel poses such a threat, why not utilize maritime aircraft to locate it, and then sink it as a menace to navigation using either naval gunfire or a torpedo?

You are correct.

In the late 1970s, I came across a McDERMOTT launch barge adrift in the Mindoro Strait. I had a small supply boat with only 1600 HP but we secured a line to the barge and started towing it. Once that line was attached and I had control of the barge, and there were no owner personnel on board, it was mine.

The owner quite readily paid me US$125,000.00 to give it back. I was very happy.
