The young American woman trampled to death by elephants in Thailand was a "fearless" outdoor researcher who knew how to handle dangerous animals, her family said Friday.
Lily Glidden's body was found in a forest five days after she went for a walk in the Kaeng Krachan National Park and never returned, police said.
Her camera contained photos of wildlife, and investigators believe she was crushed by elephants based on the nature of her injuries.
"We believe that what happened to Lily was a result of unknowable and unusual circumstances which she must have been unable to foresee or prevent," her family said in a statement.
Glidden, who graduated from Tufts University in 2012 with a biology degree, had done work trapping wolves in the West, handling venomous snakes in Hong Kong, and counting game animals on the Serenegti plain. She spent a year in tracking and survival training at a wilderness school.

Watched a body-camera vid of an African elephant being stalked by seven hunters; when it got tired of being followed & wheeled about to charge, all seven fired. The smallest rifle was a .375 H&H, the largest probably a .505 Gibbs (no double rifles). Even this huge volley failed to bring it down & the wounded elephant turned to flee but then the back of its head was an easy mark & a single .375 anchored it.
Dangerous ten-ton rats is how local villagers refer to elephants; white hunters with their guns & their cash are most welcome.
Elephant1 to Elephant2: “When are they going to fix these bumps in road, man?!”
It’s never a smart thing to start annoying and making nervous and anxious large higher order animals you are eye level with like horses and elephants. They’re unaccustomed to being confronted like this and as this poor woman learned only to late they’ll let you know it and how.
Elephant 2. “I don’t know but these stupid liberals really feel weird in between your toes. “
Sometimes you get the elephant...
Seriously, sometimes even professionals make fatal mistakes.
Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the elephant!
Fixed it.
In before shame on you, a woman is dead and you’re joking!
Shot placement and knowing when to run is everything.
I thought that a domesticated and well-treated elephant was basically a useful tractor/ front-end loader.
A good shelter to hide in is recommended too.

Evidently she did not know enough. Anyone that knows anything about wild animals , knows that you let them alone. Especially those that can kill you. And as far as trapping wolves in the West goes, there was a reason that the old timers shot wolves on sight.
Who foots the bill for these research programs and what value do the findings have to some working stiff in Houston?
There are times when it is more judicious to fear more than it is to fear less.
This was one of those times.
The evidence would suggest otherwise.
