ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - An investigation is underway into the shooting death of a German Shepherd by a St. Petersburg police officer.

Police say officers were trying to stop Kenneth McNeal, 21, who they say was trespassing in Williams Park while walking a dog, which was on a leash. When McNeal ignored officers' verbal directions to stop so they could question him, they tried to physically detain him. Police say there was a struggle, then McNeal let go of the leash and the dog tried to bite one of the officers.

Good question:

“I’ve encountered him and his dog, three times. I’ve actually petted that dog myself,” said Madrid.

“We saw them walk up. we saw them, that’s what attracted our attention in the first place shining the lights in this man’s face,” said Carmen Palmer.

Carmen Palmer is Madrid’s girlfriend, who also witnessed the account Thursday night.

According to St. Pete Police, this all started at Williams Park, where officers were trying to arrest McNeal for trespassing.

He was walking the dog on a leash, when police said McNeal let go and the dog tried to attack an officer.

It’s an account the couple questioned.

“There were 7 or 8 people around him so if he was trespassing why isn’t anybody else,” said Madrid.

I’ve searched for park hours, and there are none. I know where this park is, and have driven by it often. It’s not fenced or gated.

Fair enough—I am not familiar with this particular park.

Looks like another Wrongful Dog Shooting...

If there were other people in the park at the time...there will be some explaining to do here. Unless this man had a Trespass Warning from this park within one year before shooting date....this LEO agency will need to lawyer up

LEO Training needs to dump their Shoot Any And All Animals training (yes they are trained to do this)

I checked the city code. The park closes at 2300, opens 30min prior to sunrise. St. Pete cops don't play around.

Wow — the crime rate must be negligible to non-existent in St Petersburg for them to be spending resources on this.

Sooner or later people are going to learn to avoid all contact with the police. The police are no longer your friend. Not even to the bootlicking, cop worshipers.

When the crime rate is negligible, it’s often because police are spending resources on things like this. It’s funny but it’s true: Enforcing law and order on the smaller things (graffiti, public trespassing, squeegee guys) helps everything.

And when you consider the things that go down in public parks at night ...

and why is it any wonder someone just might let go of a leash if officers are physically detaining them?

you do not want to be anywhere near cops anymore. don’t speak to them.
