'I sleep with one eye open': Woman, 37, who was 'raped by pizza delivery boy, 16, as her daughter slept beside her' opens up about the horrific attack she says ruined her life

A woman who was attacked and raped in her Manhattan apartment in 2012 has come forward to detail the horrific night a teenage pizza boy allegedly assaulted her as her 7-year-old daughter slept in the bed beside her. Kia Graves, 37, reveals that her life has been utterly turned upside down since the night Cesar Lucas, 17, is charged with slipping into her apartment and having his way with her while out on a run for his father's 10th Avenue pizza restaurant. 'I have nightmares thinking that he’s getting out of jail, and I wake up all the time making sure my door is locked,' said the shell-shocked mom. Unfortunately, her door was not locked that September night. Cesar Lucas was working as a delivery boy at Sal’s Pizza in the same Manhattan neighborhood as the woman’s luxury apartment building. He was delivering a pizza to the next-door flat when he noticed that the door was slightly ajar and allegedly entered the apartment. Graves, a former actress turned model agency employee, had gone to bed with her daughter an hour and a half before the alleged incident. It was the last time Grave says she's had a normal night's sleep. 'I sleep with one eye open, basically,' she told the New York Daily News. 'I have panic attacks and I wake up in sweats.' Graves no longer works and lives each day crippled by her memories of the attack. 'I don’t know what to do,' she said. 'I’m just seeing my doctor and hoping for the best.'

Don’t joke like that. And who leaves their door open, especially in New York City?

get a medium to large dog. take akido. get a few weapons and an alarm.

oh... and to do this, you’ll have to move out of NYC... since they want you defenseless... so you’ll vote for more police protection (ie: bigger govt). not that more cops would help

Stories like these might be different if the victim had a gun. I wouldn’t let that scum out of my apartment alive, or at least without a major wound.

NYC, no guns allowed.

Too bad she didn’t have a knife under her pillow.

The Dems want this kind of behavior so that they can push more bills to control us. That includes disarming us in case you haven’t noticed.

So where will you be when we need you for the reset? How many ran away before July 4, 1776? It is true we are powerless to make the necessary changes before the coming upheaval, but we will need all hands on deck after it to refocus a revitalization of adherence to the Constitution.

And who lives in a luxurious apt. building but doesn’t have a doorman? I don’t understand the unlocked door, either. Most Manhattan “luxurious” doors automatically lock as soon as the door closes. And most of them are designed to close hard with a bang. This is not to be negative towards the poor woman - only the Daily Mail’s lousy reporting.

By "lousy reporting," do you mean things like Graves, a former actress turned model agency employee, had gone to bed with her daughter an hour and a half before the alleged incident. It was the last time Grave says she's had a normal night's sleep. She spent the night being raped, with her daughter sleeping beside her. In what universe is that a normal night's sleep?

What are you talking about? Honestly, I have no idea. I’m talking about the use of the word “luxury” primarily. I want more details about the apartment building. Was it a doorman building? Was the door really ajar? Why was a pizza delivery man allowed to roam the halls of a luxury apartment building? As a NYer, a detail like that tells me something.

Either way, this poor woman is going to live her life in fear. Best thing for her to do is move far away and try to rebuild.
As for the perp, he should hang.

Her first mistake was living in New York City where the Government forbids one from defending one's self from criminals without getting in trouble with the law.

If I planned to engage in a life of crime, I would be in New York City before noon time.

Sigh. Crime statistics are down in NYC. The Daily Mail spends its entire budget on finding horrendous stories about AMERICA. Ever notice all the crazy stories about people in backwoods America, Florida and Texas? That’s a British thing, unfortunately. They call it “click-bait.”

Just because crime statistics are down doesn’t mean that crime is down. The statistical crime is based on reported crimes. Unreported crime does not factor in.

New information in this difficult to suss out story: she routinely left her door unlocked to allow relatives in without a key. The perp had robbed a customer prior yet Sal’s Pizza did not fire him. Still know nothing about the building itself except from the Daily Mail.

Where was dad?

Dad had been there earlier that night and left.

She has two other roommates

They live across the hall from her mother and leave the door open as a regular policy.

OK, it was a doorman building. Big building. They cut staff and only one doorman was working after midnight when this occurred. He didn’t wonder when the rapist didn’t appear after 10 minutes? Sheesh. Some odd details but I don’t want to think too much about this crime.

She left the door unlocked, not open. Still a very stupid thing to do. Why not give family members a key? I always gave my parents a key to my apartment and never, ever had it unlocked. But of course my door automatically locked and had some device built in so that it swung closed and slammed shut. A similar building too, although much smaller.

This article from DM says "He was delivering a pizza to the next-door flat when he noticed that the door was slightly ajar and allegedly entered the apartment."

Looks to me like the victim was complacent, and just assumed nothing bad would ever happen, because it never had before in her experience.

I can’t see in the Daily News article where it said she left the door ajar. Perhaps the News was being too polite to get into that. But I just noticed she lives in the Lincoln Center area - nice area although of course creeps are everywhere. For some reason, I assumed it was one of the big new buildings on the west side/mid town area.

The doorman really did not do his job that night.

I knew what you were referring to. I was referring to the rapist's father. From the article: ......"The then 16-year-old was on a delivery for his father's restaurant Sal's Pizza on Manhattan's West Side. He'd been charged with breaking into apartments before".....

The father of the rapist knew his son was a criminal and allowed him to continue his criminal behavior and further escalate to rape.

To blame the woman for being raped because her daughter's father was not around is wrong. Whose fault would it be if the woman's husband was out of town earning a living? Whose fault would it be if her husband was sleeping in a different room because he snored and didn't hear the rapist? The blame lies with the rapist. The father was totally irresponsible knowing what he knew and giving him a delivery job.

You’re misrepresenting my comment by insinuating that I’m blaming the family for the rape.

Would you object if I asked where her gun was?

My terse yet serious remark was a statement on modern, fatherless households. I was obviously mistaken about this particular family; however, the excerpt gives no indication otherwise. And yes, I believe the destruction of the family has given way to this type of predatory behavior.

Well, I did not intend to misrepresent your comment. Your comments dealt with something lacking in the woman’s life - a husband in bed with her. Now it is a gun.

I understand your point about the “destruction of the family” as a contributing cause to increase in rapes...but you focused on the victim, not the predator.

That was my only point.

It shouldn’t be controversial to discuss the whereabouts of the father/husband when the mom is raped alongside her sleeping daughter. I submitted this as a question of defense.

To your point, I agree there are many legitimate reasons why daddy might not be home — it shouldn’t be necessary to avoid crime.

I’m not so certain. At least here in Chicago, it’s very difficult to report a crime.

True story: 2012 - There was a break in at an occupied apartment, tenant not home at the time. The tenant was told that they couldn’t give a report unless the landlord was there as the tenant didn’t own the building. A day later the landlord goes to the police station and is told that he cannot fill out a report of the crime at the station and must go back to the scene of the crime and wait for a squad. Squad is called and didn’t show up for 2 hours. Landlord went home. No crime reported. Maybe NY is less corrupt than Chicago.
